Loving the awards so far, particularly for The Favourite. And script for Burning (great write-up Chien - actually all the write-ups have been great).

I'd say very few of us saw any of those docs, but I was able to see They Shall Not Grow old twice on TV. Not sure if I could have stomached it on the big screen, but it was powerful. Great doc.

I confess I have had to scrounge this next featurette from IMDB, not had a chance to see the movie and John was unable to get his to me in time.

Shoplifters

A Japanese couple stuck with part-time jobs and hence inadequate incomes avail themselves of the fruits of shoplifting to make ends meet. They are not alone in this behaviour. The younger and the older of the household are in on the act. The unusual routine is about to change from care-free and matter-of-fact to something more dramatic, however, as the couple open their doors to a beleaguered young girl. The reasons for the family's habit and their motivations come under the microscope.

Mandy was Johansson's final score, and quite possibly his best. Added a new dimension to the film, like all good scores. So sad that he's gone.

My thoughts on Shoplifters:

A sort of Best of Hirokazu Kore-eda, taking in themes and tropes from his previous movies. It's got the impovrished children of Nobody Knows, the class observation of Like Father Like Son, the sweet family bonds of Our Little Sister, and even the justice systems critique of The Third Murderer. But this is probably his strongest film, addressing the issue of nature v nurture in a moving, complex, humane story of a makeshift family making ends meet as they take on strays.

And following up that award nicely, another Best Picture featurette, this time for multiple award winner, The Favourite.

The Favourite

Early 18th century. England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne's ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen's companion. Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfill her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way.

Deserved. 3 amazing performances with some great support.

And also deserved for cinematography. Robbie did an amazing job to make something that reflected the left-of-field tone.

Hated Shoplifters. It's everything that the anti-Roma crowd states that movie is - pretentious, slow, and anticlimactic. Don't get why it's so acclaimed.
It's not destroying. It's making something new.
