Reel Society of Film Critics Awards 2019

Post by silversurfer19 »

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the 2019 Reel Society Of Film Critics Awards, the ceremony that celebrates and honours the movies and actors that sought not just to ensure quality, but also to entertain each and every member of the fantaverse and beyond. All movies released during 2018 within the United States have been considered, and after a long and diligent process, the valued members of the committee have narrowed down the prestige of those movies to tonight's nominees. It is from these nominees that voting has been canvased, and tonight I will reveal the winners of each award. The last couple of ballots have trickled in and I have whittled down all the nominees to reveal our winners!

Whilst 2018 seemed to be a landmark year in terms of both racial and sexual equality thanks to the likes of Black Panther dominating the box office and the echoes of the Me Too movement having huge effects upon the movie going world (and indeed western society), Hollywood was able to have a lasting impression beyond its political intentions. There were many great movies which graced each and every genre, movies that will be remembered long into the future, and many of those films will be recognised tonight during the ceremony. From the musical breakout A Star Is Born proving Lady Gaga can somehow manage a film career, to the sci-fi movies that were Annihilation and The Endless, genre movies were a great success story of 2018. This expanded on to period movies, with the unique take on it that came from The Favourite, while foreign language movies created a foothold in our ceremony in Shoplifters, Burning, The Guilty and Cold War. This isnt to suggest traditional dramatic movies were forgotten, as films such as First Reformed proved the impact of a strong story with fantastic acting. Each movie proved that film is still at its absolute pinnacle in terms of craft, story and entertainment, and we look forward to honouring them all tonight. So please, will you join me in looking back at the year that has passed and the movies that graced our cinemas, courtesy of Fantaverse member, Sleepy Skunk.

There will be in total 16 awards handed out this evening, celebrating films for their acting, technicalities, writing and overall vision, and they will be announced in the following order, with Best Picture nominees celebrated at various points of the evening:

Looking forward to this, as I cook and eat my dinner. Better then the Oscars where they can't eat anything for hours!

Thomasin McKenzie, for Leave No Trace

I felt the naturalistic acting from McKenzie was delightful to see and perfectly complemented the movie, I see a strong future for her.

And now, for our first Featurette of the Best Picture nominees of the evening, transformers provides us with a little spiel on A Star Is Born.

A Star is Born
If you were to write out the events of A Star is Born, I'd likely assume that it was just a run-of-the-mill Hollywood melodrama. 1.Popular artist meets a talented unknown singer by chance. 2.They fall in love. 3.Popular artist use their platform to jumpstart their partner's career. 4. Unknown artist quickly turns into a sensation. 5.Personal demons and jealously of their partner's newfound success leads popular artist into a downward spiral. 6. Inevitable weepy ending. The tremendous execution of Bradley Cooper's take on this iconic entertainment biz rise-and-fall love story is an important reminder of why a rough overview ultimately doesn't mean shit. Through nuanced direction, powerful performances and an electric chemistry between Cooper and Lady Gaga, this familiar narrative turns into an engaging, grounded and truly devastating drama that has haunted me since I left the theater.

(Side Note: The original songs are also fantastic.)

Leave No Trace had the best acting of the year by far.
It's not destroying. It's making something new.

Yes for Burning !!!
And The Favourite was well written too. But Burning's screenplay's one of the most fascinating of the year, I'm so glad we voted for this one.

Burning is really the only thing I haven't seen that'll take home any awards.
Tenet: Criterion Edition. Now with more Backwards Man.
