I just learned that Lucy in the Sky is a thinly-veiled fictional version of the Lisa Nowak story (remember that from over a decade ago?). And early word points out that the story is played completely straight, adult diapers and all. No wonder why Disney's dumping it (but they'll at least drop trou first).

The headline of just about every article is that there are no diapers.

Huh, the first review that came out claimed diapers. But still, something like that is asking to be a dark comedy, not an awards bait drama.

Diapers or not the first reactions to Lucy In The Sky are awful...

I was skeptical of the project since the beginning, considering it's Hawley's theatrical debut, but I was going to give a Portman movie the benefit of the doubt - she always makes interesting choices, even though some of the movies she stars in tend to be quite pretentious, some of her other films are among my all-time favorites.

Also the movie changes her last name to Cola, which may be one of the worst (unironic) names for a character I've heard in a long time.
It's not destroying. It's making something new.

Western Stars is getting strong early word. I could see this having $10 million in the tank based on how well music documentaries have played this year (plus, The Boss has never been the headliner in a major studio film before).

Jojo Rabbit wins the Audience Award in TIFF.

Looks like another gap between the critics and the crowd.

I have to wonder who influenced that vote.

This makes it the first Toronto winner since Where Do We Go Now? not to have a green score on Metacritic and the worst reviewed winner since Bella in 2006.

I'm not going to pretend like I wasn't surprised that Jojo Rabbit won the Audience Award, but it's not completely out of left field. Word was following its premiere last Sunday that it received a massive standing ovation that was among the longest of the festival. Will be interesting to see if it ends up emerging as an awards contender despite the mixed reception from the top critics.

How did nobody know that Lucy In The Sky was based on that insane diaper true story? I thought it was an original story about an astronaut losing touch with humanity after returning from space. WTF

I agree with Busc, that story seems way more ripe for a dramedy (something like I, Tonya) than a straight forward drama that completely eliminates the damn diapers. That is the story!

It looks The Irishman has just snuck into the Oscar race. Could Netflix get what it couldn't with Roma?

Yes, but I still think Marriage Story has better odds of winning Best Picture than The Irishman

Local film fest starts here tomorrow, with an opening night screening of Marriage Story. I would've gone, if only tickets weren't $60 (!) and sold out pretty fast.

They've got a pretty nice lineup this year:

Marriage Story
Jojo Rabbit
Parasite
Just Mercy
Waves
The Two Popes
The Aeronauts
Honey Boy
Dolemite Is My Name
Ford V Ferrari
Motherless Brooklyn
Clemency
Pain & Glory
The Report
and a ton of foreign films I've never heard of

I've already got tickets for Jojo Rabbit and Honey Boy (both screenings of Marriage Story sold out), and considering Just Mercy as well.

I'd choose anything that might not play theatrically otherwise. Dolemite, The Two Popes, The Aeronauts, and who knows if this is still the plan for The Report (I did see a coming soon poster at my local arthouse, which seems to be a sign that it will play a traditional run).
