What a strange set of winners. It seems like a weak year.

As I explained, I think it's more the factor that Golden Globes are becoming more and more irrelevant. The Critic's Choice Awards has been a better predictor of Oscar glory lately while the Foreign Press still has the reputation of being easily bribed (how else do you explain Vice's six nominations?).

Bohemian Rhapsody made millions of dollars but I don't think anyone outside of some easily impressed figures of a dying industry would call it award-winning.

In a bit of surprise (but not really), Roma won Best Picture at the Critic's Choice Awards. An even bigger surprise might be First Reformed winning Best Original Screenplay (so maybe this one hasn't been forgotten by the voters yet).

With those now out of the way, Roma now looks to be in the front seat at making history (first foreign language Best Picture winner, shortest theatrical-to-home window for a winner, etc.). However, the Oscars might choose to continue its (non-existent) feud with Netflix and award a more traditional film (Green Book, barring its recent controversy though the Academy has ignored such things in the past, could be a compromise pick).

I think that Roma might be a bit too niche for the Academy. If Beale Street Could Talk has a similar structure, but it is presented in a more straightforward style.
It's not destroying. It's making something new.

Green Book wins the PGA award. In this decade, the PGA has agreed with the Academy all but twice (the last time was La La Land, the other time was the bizarre selection of The Big Short).

If I were a betting man, I'd call these the top four:

1. Roma
2. Green Book
3. The Favourite
4. A Star is Born

It certainly seems to be between Roma an Green Book now.

It's a tough one. Roma is adored by the film-making community, but Green Book is tkhe more Oscar-friendly film. I'm going with Green Book for the moment.

I was looking at Gold Derby and they still have A Star is Born as the favorite. They are also very high on Vice (I'm amazed that this has gotten so much awards buzz but the comparable On the Basis of Sex has had none whatsoever).

If Bale gets another Oscar, this might make him the least deserving winner of multiple Oscars. He's basically a ridiculous parody of Daniel Day-Lewis now.

I still think A Star is Born is the film to beat.

Disappointed by the lack of First Reformed in nearly every category. Was Vice really more worthy?

I was unsure if de Tavira would sneak in. It wasn't a great performance (though I blame the writing more than anything) but I felt she had more of a chance than Gold Derby thought.

Speaking of Gold Derby, they were truly sitting on Christopher Robin. Excellent motion capture and almost none of their people had it getting nominated (some had Welcome to Marwen over it!). And I think they had Roma winning Film Editing (what editing?).

Some thoughts...

Cold War getting a nod for director is incredible. Delighted. And obviously deserved for cinematography and foreign.

The Favourite deserves all 10 of its nominations.

Surprised Vice is doing well. More about the academy's political frustrations, because both critics and folks I know have not been kind.

Agree with Boosch that De Tavira's performance was not worthy of a nomaintion. then again, the person I expected to get in there, Claire Foy for First Man, didn't deserve it either.

First Reformed was snubbed. Might have been over Schrader's controversial comments a few weeks ago. I thought Ethan Hawke was amazing in it.

BlackKlansman had good moments but it was terribly edited. Really surprised about that one.

Did anyone see Buster Scruggs getting 3 noms?

Also Never Look Away getting 2 noms is very surprising. No one is very excited about it.

Several of these noms truly stunned me (Willem Dafoe, Pawel Pawlikowski, Marina de Tavira, Christopher Robin, every nom for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs). Didn't expect the If Beale Street Could Talk Best Picture, Bradley Cooper Best Director or Won't You Be My Neighbor? Best Documentary snubs either. Guess the influx of new Academy members actually did make an impact.

Cold War's done well in limited release and the Academy likes Pawlikowski.

As for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, credit it to Netflix's relentless promotion (Roma's planned to get $20 million more in Oscar campaigning). Personally, I didn't care for it but the Coens are popular with the Academy.

I knew Foy wouldn't get nominated. 2018 was supposed to be the Year of the Foy and all three of her films flopped (two spectacularly).

And Best Documentary was a difficult category to grade. You had the box office hits but you also had Hale County and Minding the Gap getting so much love. 2018 was so good for documentaries that Monrovia, Indiana didn't even make the shortlist.

What an overall pretty lame set of nominees. I mean, I know it wasn't a great year for American cinema, and there are still a couple of good films in there, and a couple of films I have yet to see, but man, so many noms for Black Panther and Bbohemian Rhapsody, and so many forgettable films.
Leave no Trace, The Rider, Hereditary, The Sisters Brothers... the best films were completely shut out. And Ready Player one, First Man or Isle of Dogs are barely present.
