MOST ANTICIPATED FILMS OF 2018 (AWARDS EDITION)

Post by numbersix »

Summer's over, rain's here, time to hole up in a cinema for the next few months.

Seen and liked: I am Not a Witch, The Guilty, Cold War

Maybes: Suspiria, The Predator, Capernaum, Outlaw King, Assassination Nation

10. If Beale Street Could Talk
From the director of Moonlight, this will at least be beautifully shot.

9. Halloween
Who would have thunk that a horror sequel would make my list. But the bizarre choice of writing and directing team, plus the great trailer, makes me curious.

8. Under the Silver Lake
Mixed reviews can often make for an exciting film. Especially when it's by the maker of It Follows. And it has Chien's stamp of approval.

7. Peterloo
Any Mike Leigh movie is a must, but this telling of a historical massacre sounds even more exciting.

6. Shoplifters
I've liked (never loved) most of Hirokazu Kore-eda's work, and I bet I'll like this Palme D'Or winner.

5. First Man
Damien Chazelle has talent, for sure, and him taking on a space biopic sounds great.

4. Burning
Lee Chang-dong's Poetry was such a wonderful film, and this received rave reviews in Cannes.

3. Hold the Dark
This might be the year Netflix actually make good originals. The trailer for Jeremy Saulnier's latest looks intense.

2. The Ballad of Buster Scuggs
It's the Coens! Enough said.

1. The Favourite
Yorgos Lanthimos's new film is (according to its producer) his most commercial film to date. The teaser looks delightfully offbeat.

Moving on, this fall is kind of odd for me. There's a pretty sizable number of titles I'm really looking forward to, but I'm far less interested in the awards slate than usual. Maybe WOM from the festival circuit and the release of more promotional material will change my mind. My top 10 is as follows heading into Labor Day Weekend:

10.Suspiria
9.A Simple Favor
8.Hold the Dark
7.Apostle
6.Creed 2
5.Mandy
4.First Man
3.Widows
2.Bad Times at the El Royale
1.The Predator

Also interested in:
A Star is Born
Assassination Nation
Aquaman
Backseat
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Bohemian Rhapsody
Bumblebee
Halloween
Holmes and Watson
Green Book
If Beale Street Could Talk
Monsters and Men
Night School
The Nun
Outlaw King
Overlord
Serenity
The Sisters Brothers
White Boy Rick

Titles I was once very excited for that I'm now really skeptical about, but will still watch at some point:
Alita: Battle Angel
The Girl in the Spider's Web
Venom

Titles I will watch because I can't say no to action movies that are theatrically-released:
Hunter Killer
Peppermint
Robin Hood

Titles I'll watch because I get awards season fever:
Roughly 90% of the contenders not listed above

Damn Tranny, you cant have em all ;) Ive compiled my 10 most anticipated...

10. Johnny English Strikes Again
I really enjoyed the first 2 movies, Rowan Atkinson as self annointed Secret Agent but never manages to do it with class unless by complete accident, just my type of movie. And who would have thought we get a trilogy out of this character?!

9. The Favourite
You can blame six for this being here ;) After i was blown away by The Lobster, i saw The Killing of a Sacred Deer in an indie cinema for the first time- good but i need to see some more Yorgos.

8. First Man
I can already see Boosh hammering his disgust in this, such is his hatred of Whiplash. But while i skipped La La Land, this one has piqued my interest

7. Under the Silver Lake
The trailer looked pretty good and then Chien said its in his top movies of 2018, so theres a good chance i see this in Cinema.

6. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Great cast, great directors and hopefully another good modern western

5. Bad Times At the El Royale
The Cabin in the Woods left such a mark that it vaults this one up into my top 5 here, should be awesome

4. Bohemian Rhapsody
Had this featured Sacha Baron Cohen it my have been No.1 but Rami Malek gets his chance to shine here. Also, can't go wrong with a cast that has Mike Myers and Aiden Gillen

3. The Predator
Big fan of the original and needed something more after the pretty dismal last effort with Adrien Brody. Cant wait :)

2. Ralph Breaks the Internet
If you didn't like the 1st, shame on you. Should be a rollicking adventure again

1. Holmes and Watson
The re-teaming of 2 of my fav funny men on the planet, i hope its more Step Brothers level than Ricky Bobby. Still, im excited!

Eh, the trailer pretty much gave everything away. I'll stick to my Apollo 13 while critics and audiences fawn over Chazelle's latest pandering tactics.

I'm only into The First Man because of Chazelle, the trailer did nothing for me. He's made two great movies so far, so I'll be there based on that alone.

Nothing's really blowing my skirt up for the rest of the year, perhaps Creed 2? Halloween?

I should have worded it differently. I felt that the trailer showed the entire film in a two-minute span (A Simple Favor also seemed to do this when it wasn't busy showing Anna Kendrick's one emotion).

As for most anticipated, I'd prefer not to do a list. I don't want to disappoint myself.

You mean to tell me that there isn't a twist at the end and this isn't a flat earther movie?

I haven't been keeping up with future releases for a while now. I usually just wait to see what shows up at my favourite indie theatres and take it form there.

A new Coen Brothers movie is always worth a look, and the trailers for Little Stranger and Mortal Engines both caught my eye. I hated the original Suspiria, but Call Me By Your Name was excellent, so the remake might be worth a look.

Fairly certain Kyrie Irving is a silent partner.

The reviews of Roma are pushing it up high on my Most Anticipated list.
