yeah, The Director's Fortnight is year after year an exciting place to discover films.
I'm also quite curious about Nicloux and Salvadori's films, and the new animated film by Mamoru Hosoda who's probably the more talented filmmaker in animation working today, or close to it.

In lieu of the huge standing ovation it received at its premiere , I'd like to come out and admit that I was dead fucking wrong about how BlackKklansman would be received at Cannes. If those Netflixphobes ate it up, it must be something special ;)

Netflix couldn't make a film like BlacKkKlansman. They're too busy pandering to the lowest common denominator.

Complete TIFF: https://www.tiff.net/tiff/films.html?schedule

The head of the local non-profit here is planning a six-day, 30 movie orgy in hopes of finding some titles for the late 2018/early 2019 lineup.

If I were in high finance and had a valid passport (I haven't left the States since a Mexico visit a decade ago), my picks (which add up to 30).

9/6: Monsters and Men: 9:00 pm
The Predator: 11:59 pm

9/7: The Fall of the American Empire: 9:45 am
Sharkwater Extinction: 2:00 pm
Capernaum: 4:30 pm

9/8: Beautiful Boy: 10:45 am
Can You Ever Forgive Me?: 2:15 pm
Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner: 8:15 pm
Halloween (2018): 11:59 pm

9/9: The Sisters Brothers: 10:00 am
The Public: 2:30 pm
If Beale Street Could Talk: 6:00 pm
Climax: 11:59 pm

9/10: Peterloo: 2:00 pm
Maria by Callas: 6:45 pm
Birds of Passage: 9:45 pm

9/11: Long Day's Journey Into Night: 3:45 pm
Green Book: 8:00 pm

9/12: Colette: 12:00 pm
Persona: 5:15 pm
What They Had: 8:00 pm

9/13: The Joy Luck Club: 4:15 pm
The Kindergarten Teacher: 9:30 pm

9/14: Searching for Ingmar Bergman: 12:45 pm
The Passion of Joan of Arc: 6:15 pm
Shoplifters: 9:00 pm

9/15: Everybody Knows: 5:00 pm
Destroyer: 9:45 pm

9/16: Monrovia, Indiana: 12:15 pm
Galveston: 8:45 pm

Meanwhile, I thought I read Dragged Across Concrete was going to be screened. This would seem like a good title for the Midnight series.

A movie I worked on, Float Like A Butterfly, is premiering in Toronto! Pity I won't be there.

Dragged Across Concrete is premiering at Venice on September 3rd. I heard some baseless speculation that it was also going to screen at Fantastic Fest, but it wasn't apart of the second wave announcement earlier this week.

I'd love to go to Toronto some day. Their lineups are always very diverse and I've heard nothing but good things about the city.

The Vancouver festival is shaping up and so far I'm not blown away by the lineup. Under The Sliver Lake, The House That Jack Built, Climax, and Shoplifters are about the only ones I've heard of, and there seems to be a distinct lack of genre fare compared to previous years. They haven't announced the Gala Presentations yet, so hopefully there'll be a few more buzz-worthy titles to come. https://viff.org/Online/program-updates

And as a Canadian who lives outside of Toronto, it's my sworn duty to point out that Toronto sucks.

Burning and Shoplifters are two films playing in VIFF that are top of my Must-See list

John, I can only recommend you buy yourself a ticket for MICROHABITAT which plays at VIFF.
It's one of the very best films I've seen this year, one I will screen at my festival in Paris this year, it's a true highlight this year. Don't miss it !!

Green Book wins the People's Choice Awards in TIFF. I did not see that coming, as it looks kinda rote and saccharine. Could be a big hit, though

Runners up were Roma and If Beale Street Could Talk.

Mortensen wants that Oscar and he might get it now. Also a good waiver wire pickup for me.

I was sure Roma would win it but I wonder if the Netflix factor hurt it.

Good call on Green Book, Boosch.

In other news, the film I worked on, Float Like A Butterfly, also picked up the Discovery Award, which was unexpected!
