The 1st featurette of the evening is for Edgar Wright's jukebox musical heist action romance Baby Driver, provided by yours truly:
There aren't many filmmakers who appear to be having more fun making movies than Edgar Wright. That visceral passion for his craft to the screen than usual on Baby Driver, which is my favorite film of his since Shaun of the Dead. Its music-like rhythm, collection of vivid characters and stunning car chases made this a unique, electric heist film that I'll cherish for the rest of my days.

Here's our 2nd featurette of the night for coming-of-age romance (and newly-minted Best Adapted Screenplay winner) Call Me by Your Name, presented by surfer:

Like an eclipse, that catch-your-breath moment in life between adolescence and adulthood, so richly portrayed in Call Me By Your Name, is a revelation, and thoroughly deserving of its Best Picture nomination here. Its a reminder of that time of your life when the two eras overlap, baring all the nervous energy and deep emotions that the soul encounters during this brief time in young life.

Its a truly beautiful movie, a coming of age movie that doesnt pull any punches. Neither do its actors. Timothee Chalamet is breathtaking in his breakout role, while Armie Hammer proves he has the acting chops to match him at every moment of this deeply romantic movie. The writing from James Ivory is equally stunning, with a monologue near the end of the movie from Michael Stuhlbarg that is so full of kindness it had me in tears. Sufjan Stevens soundtrack further elevates the movie, bringing his confessional lyrics most familiar to his fans to a character that leaves you numb by the final shot. But to top it off you have the most beautiful scenery in which the movie is set, as you are caught up in the landscape of that late summer European balm, evoking all the emotions a young man deals with as he embarks on his first true love. Its a movie full of tenderness, and its harnessed so well it leaves quite the lasting impression. Be it the tenderness of a besotted lover, a best friend, or devoted parents, they’re all a kind of welcoming committee, nurturing Chalamets character Elio into adult feeling, which, despite its pain, is quite beautiful.

Our 3rd Best Picture featurette of the evening is for Pixar's latest tearjerker Coco, presented by Walleye:
You know if it's Pixar, it's going to be fantastic. Well, except Cars. For years the Pixar brand has consistently been one of the few in all of Movie-land that could just about guarantee a quality show - entertaining for both the kids and the adults. Once you set the bar that high, however, it gets harder and harder to match it. But what happens when you exceed it? You get Coco.

Coco centers around Miguel, and his passion to change the world through music. In a family of cobblers however (Was Daniel Day-Lewis there?), music isn't just frowned upon, it's forbidden. In a backstory worthy of a Shakespearean tragedy, we hear how music tore Miguel's family apart, leaving Mama Imelda and little Coco abandoned on their own. Coco is now quite old, the family has all moved on. But Miguel, there is music in his soul - thanks to the stirrings of the greatest musician in Mexican history - Ernesto De La Cruz. When he gets the chance to play for the local village on Day of the Dead celebrations - Miguel needs to borrow the guitar of his hero, De La Cruz, since his own has been destroyed. But, one touch of the guitar and Miguel (and all of us) are transported out of the land of the living and into the Day of the Dead. The animation is remarkable, truly the most stunning colors you'll see on a screen this year. Miguel meets Hector - a "Skeleton" trying to desperately get back to see his daughter one last time before she forgets him completely. Miguel and Hector team up to help each other, along with Mariachi, Frida Kahlo, and a great assortment of side characters. To say more gives away the joy and surprises that come from this incredible story. But I'll add this - watching this movie in theaters with my family, every single one of us was crying by the end. This was, without question, my favorite movie of the year and for my money it was the best one too. I give you our next nominee: Coco.

Our next featurette features our favorite Aussie Ron B discussing his love for Jordan Peele's timely psychological horror film Get Out, which is nominated for 6 awards and (already won 1) tonight:
This movie came out of no where to become a real juggernaut of 2017 from first time director Jordan Peele (who also wrote). I knew very little about it going in which is sometimes the most satisfying way of seeing a movie -but this was on another level. Seeing it on the same night as Split i was in for a treat. Something so original in the age of shock horrors, Paranormal activities and Sharknado's is beyond fresh, minty fresh, a cool breeze that absolutely blows people out of the water.

Its clever twist on the horror genre which ranges from mystery suspense thriller to humorous horror to a kind of science fiction in the way the film use hypnotism for a genius idea of a plot device and also the mysterious reasoning behind the missing African-American men like the one you see at the beginning of the film (Lakeith Stanfield- keep an eye out for him). And on African-Americans, director Peele gives us a snapshot of the racist undertones still living in our world today, but does it with a humorous take and use the film to project this vivid picture of white man's views-such as the seedy jealousy of genetics.

Then we get to the cast- all of whom are excellent but of course is carried by the little known at the time of release Daniel Kaluuya (smaller roles in Johnny English: Reborn, Sicario, and a great episode of Black Mirror) who is the main character finding the people he should be getting to know, his white girlfriend's family. His is warned by going into this seemingly awkward-at-worst zone by his best friend Rod, Airport security and acutely aware of things nobody should know played by Lil Rel Howrey In the family well cast is Allison Williams the girlfriend but overshadowed by the others; Bradley Whitford the father, Catherine Keener the mother and brother Caleb Landry Jones (of X-Men: First Class fame).

So playing with the idea that people aren't what they seem and on top of that giving you the brick hammer that people are going missing + black man at sea full of white folk, Peele offers us a genuinly great movie. It's paced really well, i never once was bored with this and in fact i watched it 3 times in the first month of seeing it. The ending was apparently too blunt offered to audiences at trial viewings so Peele changed to what is seen now, and you would never have noticed, as its still a terrific ending.

It will be a long time before we see something that transcends one genre like this has but i really hope Peele can give us more, something else to lock in for the calender year, this time we'll all have it marked. Get Out, go see it (if you haven't already)
