MOST ANTICIPATED FILMS OF 2018 (SPRING EDITION)

Post by numbersix »

No more booze. Ever. For a week.

As we recouperate from forced celebrations, let's distract ourselves from the pain of getting older by looking ahead to what's coming out in the next 4 months.

Seen already and liked: The Double Lover (L'Amant Double), A Fantastic Woman, Loveless
Maybes: The Lodgers, Red Sparrow, Chappaquiddick, New Mutants

10: Black Panther
Curious to see how Marvel deal with one of their lesser characters for a "niche" audience.

9: Lean on Pete
Loved Haigh's last film, so hopefully this will be as good.

8: A Quiet Place
A surprisingly effective trailer, although I'm hoping it eases off the jump scares and is more like It Comes at Night.

7: Zama
Amazing reviews and a good track record are the main draws for this South American drama.

6: Foxtrot
A festival darling that I missed, and can't wait to finally see.

5: Ready Player One
Spielberg doing action is just about enough to make me want to catch it.

4: Thoroughbreds
Another festival darling, this darkly dark comedy (or darkly witty thriller?) is meant to be stunning.

3: Isle of Dogs
It's Wes Anderson doing another quirky animation. I'm there!

2: Annihilation
The Netflix deal has me worried, but I liked the trailers and the books are meant to be great, so count me in. Even if that means watching on Netflix.

1: You Were Never Really Here
Lynn Ramsay is such a great director, and from what I hear this revenge thriller is another great piece of work.

My only New Year's aperitif was a half-cup of sparkling grape juice. I still live with my parents (it's annoying, especially since Dad's a total narcissist) and they don't drink. Also, I didn't have any caffeine around (I can't operate without caffeine).

I wouldn't get my hopes high for A Quiet Place. Michael Bay produced it and Krasinski's last directorial effort was a dull, made for Sundance comedy that wasn't very funny. The whole thing seems to have "vanity project" written all over it (but of course, we seem to encourage these things nowadays).

And Annihilation tested poorly and any attempts to improve the film got vetoed by Scott Rudin. Maybe it's for the best that it's getting dumped.

I'll go by release order (as I'll sure revivals will be my most anticipated, Coffy's playing here at the end of the month):

Paddington 2 (January 12th)
Gringo (March 9th)
Ready Player One (March 30th)
Lean on Pete (March 30th)
You Were Never Really Here (April 6th)

I'm still waiting on a date for First Reformed. Don't know why A24 has never scheduled it.

Happy New year guys ! I managed to stay mostly sober those last few days, so I'll drink a glass of red wine in your honour Six, at some point during the week. If you manage to keep that week free of booze ;)

Honestly, I had a hard time gathering 10 films I’m excited about in the first quarter of 2018. I’d be lying if I’d put any more superhero films in such a list, so I don’t, not the Marvel/DC type at least. In fact I should have made a Top 5 rather than a Top 10, but I still found a fews other films I’m curious to see.
I’ll go and watch much more films in theaters, but most of the films getting released in France in the coming weeks are films released in late 2017 in the US, for the more high-profile ones.

Anyway, I have already seen the following films :
In the great category : A Fantastic Woman, Loveless, The Rider, Back to burgundy (Ce qui nous lie).
In the good but a bit disappointing : You were never really here.
The bad one : Double Lover.

10. Oh Lucy !
I’m curious about this one, but not really excited. Might be a bit crazy, which is fine by me.

9. Zama
I’m always interested in a Lucrecia Martel film, so I’ll go see it.

8. The 15 :17 to Paris
I’m also always interested in a Clint Eastwood film, although I’m very wary of this one.

7. A Quiet Place
The good teaser is the only reason I listed it here.

6. Mary and the Witch’s Flower
I really liked this Japanese anime director previous film, so I’ll go see this one.

5. Lean on Pete
45 Years was a really good film, can’t wait to see Haigh’s new film.

4. Annihilation
I’m not even sure if/when I’ll see this one given it will only be on Netflix, and I don’t have Netflix. And I really wish I could see it in theater, so maybe one day it’ll play at a festival and I’ll be able to see it.

3. Ready Player One
An exciting premise, universe, trailer. This looks quite insane.

2. Psychokinesis
A Korean film, unfortunately, once more, only for Netflix outside Korea, probably around February or March. Tssss… It’s the new film from the director of “Train to Busan”, some sort of Korean superheroic human comedy. Yep, I’m in.

1. Isle of Dogs
The new film from my favourite American director working today. It can only be number one here.

This spring looks really terrible to me, moreso than usual.

Other than Black Panther, there's literally nothing that I'm excited for. Some I'll check out, based on curiousity: A Quiet Place, Annihilation, Gringo, Red Sparrow (really need to see a better trailer).

On paper, I really would like to see Tully, but there's nothing out about it yet so who knows. But Reitman may be one of my favorite directors, and Diablo Cody always writes an entertaining movie, even if it doesn't appeal to everyone.

Everything else I could skip and I wouldn't even notice.

And I totally forgot about Early Man. Aardman has yet to make a bad movie.

It's from Airplane!.

The full bit:

When I watched it in the theatre a few days ago, everyone burst out laughing when the mirror appeared.
