Part two of the South Korean double bill of Best Picture nominees. For this featurette, numbersix provides his comments on The Wailing.

What’s a horror film doing in a Best Film category? That’s usually reserved for more “intelligent” films dealing with serious issues such as bigotry, or more intimate portraits of family life. And yet Na Hong-jin’s film manages to be all of these things. While flirting with several genres (detective thriller, supernatural horror, zombie flick, even comedy) it manages to tease out some profound ideas, tying casual racism (a Korean village afraid of a Japanese hermit who they believe is a demon) into the idea of sin and guilt, with perception and fear creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. This film, which becomes about a cop’s attempt to save his possessed daughter as villagers start dying in horrific ways, is intense, emotive and engaging for every second of its 156 minutes.

Now for the final featurette of the evening, provided by undeadmonkey. For your consideration, Zootopia.

Zootopia (also known as Zootropolis in other countries) was produced by Disney Animation Studios. The film was directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, co-directed by Jared Bush. The film details the unlikely partnership between a rabbit police officer and a fox con artist as they uncover a conspiracy which involves the disappearance of predator inhabitants of the mammalian metropolis.

Disney Animation has come a long way since the early aughts to the point where they seem to be hitting another Golden Age of animation. Hitting their stride in Zootopia with clever and charming animation. , Shrew-town being a highlight. The film features an outstanding voice cast of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, Nate Torrence, Bonnie Hunt, Don Lake, Tommy Chong, J. K. Simmons, Octavia Spencer, Alan Tudyk, and and my personal favorite, Shakira. The screenplay is humorous and fast paced, touching on themes about discrimination and social stereotypes.

Affleck was good, so pretty content with that.

But Villeneuve deserves every inch of his imaginary award - not only are his films great, but they're better than their scripts, because he's that good a director.

Yeah, so happy for this one. Suspected it might be the one we all like most collectively.

A beautiful film. Can't wait to watch again. Naturalistic performances, a twist that isn't "shocking" but one that powerfully ties into the theme. Great visuals and score. And proof that a "genre" film can be as good and intellectual and meaningful as any other film.

Well done for putting all this together, Surf!

I actually think hosting it on a Sunday is better, because a lot of us go out Saturday evenings. I guess not a lot of us are here tonight because it was late notice? What do you all think?

As for the awards, I think it's one of the best we've ever had.

I definitely think this is one of the best list of winners we ever had, if only because Arrival deserves all those awards. Especially Best Film and Best Director. It's such an amazing film. And Amy, of course.
I'm also glad monlight got Best Cast, Affleck Best Actor, one of the Koreans Best Foreign, Best Screenplay for Hell of High Water and Bests Score for La La Land. I could have seen a bit more for those two, but it's still a damn fine set of deserving winners.

Sunday night is fine with me, indeed on the saturday I'm more likely to be out, and I was here at the beginning of the ceremony.
Thanks for hosting again, Surf.

Am I the only one who didn't like Jackie's score? It felt like the same piece of music played over and over with slightly different instruments each time. For me, it only made an overhyped film more unbearable to watch (it's the Birdman conundrum).

And I'm probably the only person who didn't like Arrival. But of course, Villeneuve's American films just leave me cold (at least he's not as overrated by the film community as Chazelle though).
Everything on this post is strictly the opinion and only the opinion of Buscemi.

Didn't get a chance to see hardly any of these this year - but the awards always inspire me to see more. Can't wait to see where I agree with the winners and where I think you were all totally wrong :D
