The Reel Society Of Film Critics Awards Ceremony 2017

Post by silversurfer19 »

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the 2017 Reel Society Of Film Critics Awards, the ceremony that celebrates and honours the movies and actors that sought not just to ensure quality, but also to entertain each and every member of the fantaverse and beyond. All movies released during 2016 within the United States have been considered, and after a long and diligent process, the valued members of the committee have narrowed down the prestige of those movies to tonight's nominees. It is from these nominees that voting has been canvased, and tonight I will reveal the winners of each award.

While off the screen it seemed 2016 was destined to eliminate every iconic actor or musician that had played such a huge part of my upbringing, on the screen it was another spectacular year in cinema, indeed one of the most impressive in recent years. From the visually stunning sci fi of Arrival and 10 Cloverfield Lane, to the gritty realism of Green Room and Hell Or High Water, cinema proved capable of crafting stories that were visceral and emotive in equal quantity. It was also a year that celebrated the spectacle, as Damien Chazelle followed up his 2015 Best Picture Fantie Whiplash with a musical which harkened back to the golden age of cinema, and La La Land won over audiences and the box office all over the world spectacularly. Talking about the world of cinema, this was a particularly strong year for Asian cinema, and South Korea in particular, as the wave of movies from the country that have flooded since the release of the Vengeance Trilogy reach new heights in The Wailing and The Handmaiden. At the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of magnitude, it was also another year where the little guy was able to punch above his weight, with Moonlight a beautiful coming of age story with gripping performances and iconic cinematography. Finally, as it only seems right, the godfathers of cinema Disney returned with Zootopia, a movie that reached new heights for the studio. It's been a while since they have been quite this strong, and indeed having two movies that I personally felt outdid Pixar for once, it builds hope for a new golden age for the studio. Fascinating stuff all of it! Each movie proved that film is still at its absolute pinnacle in terms of craft, story and entertainment, and we look forward to honouring them all tonight. So please, will you join me in looking back at the year that has passed and the movies that graced our cinemas, courtesy of Fantaverse member, Sleepy Skunk.

And here we have a Best Picture featurette for that very movie, presented kindly by Jas.

We have always imagined what the first contact with extraterrestrial life would be like since we stared into the sky. The film Arrival chronicles that very scenario and the repercussions to such a monumental event. Based on the short story “Story of Your Life”, Arrival tells a deep and complex story of exploration, loss, grief and how we respond to extraordinary events in the world we live in as well as in our own lives. Arrival’s amazing well-crafted script slowly reveals its depth and mysteries over the course of the film through the absolutely gorgeous cinematography, haunting score, striking visual effects, and amazing performances from the cast anchored by a tour de force performance by Amy Adams. The strong direction of Denis Villeneuve creates a rubix cube of a film that will slowly reveal its mysteries all the while asking some pretty profound questions of ourselves making Arrival one of the most unique cinematic experiences of the year. Nominated for 7 awards tonight including Best Picture, this is Arrival.

Next up, I will present a featurette on the next nominee for Best Picture, Green Room.

Green Room is the uncompromising follow up to Maicon Blair's Blue Ruin. It seems there is a new stream of indie movies emerging in the US at the moment, and Blair is the spearhead of this movement with thriller's that are gripping as they uncover the dark underbelly of American society. Following up Blue Ruin, Blair was no longer an unknown commodity, and so his sophmore effort was bound to be critiqued much more vigorously. Thankfully, Green Room is just as visceral as Blair's previous movie, and holds your attention, as well as your nerves for the entire duration. Following a small punk band who, in trying to make a buck to keep their tour alive, end up playing a neo-Nazi gig in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately, just as they are about to head off following their set, they witness a murder and end up in a fight for their lives as the locals close in on them. Brutal and thrilling, Blair keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout, and leaves you completely drained with such visceral storytelling.
If this is the direction of modern Americana, then it bodes well for the future of cinema, and it only keeps you intrigued into what Macon Blair will bring to us next. Nominated for 3 categories, I give you Green Room.
