Re: Awards Season 2016
Predictable, as expected. But at least Moonlight won something.
As this point, it's like Larry Bird once said, "Who's playing for second?" Or as Dirk Nowitzki once said, "Shut it down! Let's go home!"

Re: Awards Season 2016
big surprise though coming from Taylor-Johnson winning Best Supporting actor, didn't see that one coming.
And I'm glad Huppert and Elle won.

Re: Awards Season 2016
Huppert and Taylor-Johnson's wins were shocking, everything else went as expected. While I'm not surprised at how well it did here, I'm not completely sold on La La Land pulling off a similar near clean-sweep at the SAG's, BAFTA's and Oscars.

Huppert has already won so many awards from the press in the US, her winning at the Globes isn't that shocking.

Re: Awards Season 2016
You're right, but they were mostly smaller critics award shows and aside from Marion Cotillard for La Vie en Rose, foreign films don't usually win acting awards on the national awards show stage. I figured Portman was a shoo-in based on all of the buzz surrounding her performance here in the States.Chienfantome wrote:Huppert has already won so many awards from the press in the US, her winning at the Globes isn't that shocking.

Re: Awards Season 2016
Yeah but despite the buzz everyone's been talking about, Portman has won next to nothing since the awards season has begun. Everyone's talking about her, but no one gives her awards for the performance, or so few. While Huppert wins prizes after prizes. Considering the Golden Globes are voted by journalists, it seemed natural that she was a favourite to win the award. Oscars will be a different thing though, but the win did boost her chances even more.
And even though foreign performances are rarely awarded, well, Cotillard did win recently, and Jean Dujardin, although it was amute part, won for a French film too. So why not Huppert, considering all the credit she's got from a long and amired career. And being a film by Verhoeven does help too. especially since the film was shut out from Best Foreign Language film, and some will vote for her at the Oscars to award the film.

Re: Awards Season 2016
Are the BAFTAs leaning super duper American-heavy this year? I'm only seeing consistent nods for I, Daniel Blake, but everything else is a Hollywood production it seems.

Delighted to see my homie Emmet Fleming get nominated for short film The Party. Its a pretty decent short too.

Re: Awards Season 2016
Without digging too deep, I'd say it's about the same split as usual. They've tended to nominate a solid amount of American films/actors of late.BanksIsDaFuture wrote:Are the BAFTAs leaning super duper American-heavy this year? I'm glad they felt compelled to nominate Emily Blunt. Her performance in The Girl on the Train was fucking outstanding and I'm really bummed that it's not getting the recognition it deserves here in the States.

I don't get why "A Man called Ove" got all these noms for Make-up, and now an Oscar nom, there's nothing particular about it in the film.
