Which TWO of These Classic Films Should I See This Weekend??

Post by BanksIsDaFuture »

Hey all,

My local main independent theater is hosting a RetroClassic Film Festival this weekend and they've got a killer lineup. I haven't seen ANY of these films and I'd like to see at least two this weekend (1 on Sat, 1 on Sunday).

Out of their picks, I'm most interested in The Shining, Solaris/Seven Samurai, and The Godfather. I've seen parts of Apocalypse Now and have no interest in 1941.

I think I'll only have the energy for one super long film each day, so what do you fine people suggest I see?

Currently, I'm thinking The Godfather on Saturday (4PM) and The Shining on Sunday (2:10PM). Trying not to stay out there late Sunday and I'll probably go out drinking Saturday night.....

I kinda doubt you'd like Solaris, and I have no idea why 1941 is even in that program.

You can't go wrong with any of the others, but The Godfather and Shining would edge out the other two for me.

They're probably showing the director's cut (which added back in 28 minutes and for a period was the only version available), the theme being long movies.

Yeah, Godfather and The Shining are the way to go. I loved Seven Samurai, but the other two seem like the easier route.

You haven't seen any of these films?

Besides 1941 they are all awesome and should be checked out as soon as possible.

I'm gonna say you should go for the ones that should be seen on the big screen. And that would be Apocalypse Now and The Shining. Both have an immersive visual style, not to mention some of the best sound and music film has ever given us.

The Godfather is a classic, but in some ways is less essential on the big screen because it's so character focused and, in many ways, a domestic film. The Seven Samurai is one of my favourite films, and an utter blast to watch, but it's 3 hours and I'm guessing if you haven't delved much into the classic you probably don't have a huge amount of patience for longer films. Solaris is great but VERY arthouse.

I agree with your choices, The Godfather and The Shining are must-sees and some of my favorites (The Godfather being my favorite of all-time).
