Film Festivals 2016

Post by Chienfantome »

Well, the very first official program news from the Cannes Film Festival has emerged this morning : Woody Allen's "Café Society" will open the festival next may.

There's been a lot of speculation those last few days around the US selection (Money Monster, The Nice Guys...), but nothing official except for Allen's film.

With movies like Deadpool being released in February, the summer movie season never ends either.

I read Loving is rumored to be at Cannes. I believe this will be the favorite for the Oscars (yes, over The Birth of a Nation).
Everything on this post is strictly the opinion and only the opinion of Buscemi.

indeed there's a lot of talk about Loving being at Cannes.

Sean Penn's The Last Face, either of Malick's new films (Weightless and Voyage of Time), Jarmusch's Paterson, Spielberg's BFG, and the already mentioned Money Monster and Nice Guys are the other ones rumored to be near Cannes.

I got my accreditation and a place to stay, I'm officially going to the Croisette next month. I only need to pick my train tickets and I'll be all good.

3 Korean films in official selection, including the new film from Park Chan-wook in competition and the new film from the director of The Chaser out of comp.
And that Korean film in midnight screening is about people taking a train to flee Seoul after a zombie outbreak... only to discover there are zombies in the train too. The director makes his first live action film after 3 animated features.

Those 3 Korean films alone make this Cannes line-up uber-exciting for me, but I'm also pleased to see the names of Verhoeven, Dolan, Jarmusch, Mendoza, Nichols, Refn, Kore-eda, Spielberg and others lining up as well. And a few interesting newbies to Cannes, like Kleber Mendonça Filho.
I can't wait to hear about the Director's Fortnight line-up next week, too.

I really hope I'll be able to get into the Korean screenings.

Yeah it's a decent line up. Most exciting films for me are definitely Loving, Agassi, American Honey, and Aquarius

I'm very curious about this one. Actually the director made back-to-back films in the same universe. The first one is animated, entitled "Seoul Station", and tells of the zombie outbreak in Seoul in animation.
"Train to Busan", the one screening in Cannes, follows in live action what happens for the people fleeing Seoul and the outbreak. It's not a direct sequel as the characters shouldn't be the same, but it extends the universe.

The two films should be released more or less at the same time this summer in Korea. "Seoul Station" had its world premiere last week at the Brussels Fantastic Film Festival and won the Silver Crow for 2nd Best Film of the competition.
