It's always harder to get excited about the films of the Critic's Week because it's made of 1st and 2nd feature films so most of them are unknown.
That being said, I loved the first film of the Opening film's director, Justine Triet. I'm very curious about this new one.
And Davy Chou has made a first film too, a documentary about Cambodian cinema, that was fascinating, so here's another one I'm curious about.

And Directors' Fortnight

Divines - Houda Benyamina
Dog Eat Dog - Paul Schrader
L’Économie du couple - Joachim Lafosse
L’Effet aquatique - Sólveig Anspach
La Pazza Gioia - Paolo Virzì
Les Vies de Thérèse - Sébastien Lifshitz
Ma vie de courgette - Claude Barras
Mean Dreams - Nathan Morlando
Mercenaire - Sacha Wolff
Neruda - Pablo Larraín
Poesía Sin Fin - Alejandro Jodorowsky
Raman Raghav 2.0 - Anurag Kashyap
Risk - Laura Poitras
Tour de France - Rachid Djaïdani
Two Lovers and a Bear - Kim Nguyen
Wolf and Sheep - Shahrbanoo Sadat

Of those the ones I'm most interested in are Neruda (I loved No, and will catch The Club soon), Jodorowsky's film, and Two Lovers and a Bear (loved his film War Witch).

A less exciting slate than usual for the Director's Fortnight, probably because a thinner one. Edouard Waintrop announced that because of the security that is going to be put for the access of the cinemas, they had to select less films this year becuase the process of entering the theaters is gonna be longer. Well, it's not like we're not used to queueing at Cannes 8-)

One film I am utterly excited about though is the new film from Anurag Kashyap, one of the most exciting directors to have emerged from the Director's Fortnight those last few years. Gangs of Wasseypur and Ugly were fantastic Indian noir films and I can't wait to discover this new one.

Sooooooo. The Cannes Jury has everyone talking, as they left out the films with the best word of mouth and reviews of the festival (Toni Erdmann, Aquarius, Elle...)

Palme d'Or : I, Daniel Blake (Ken Loach, UK)

Grand Prix : It's just the end of the world (Xavier Dolan, Canada)

Best Director (tie) : Personal Shopper (Olivier Assayas, France) & Bacalaureat (Cristian Mungiu, Romania)

Best Screenplay : The Salesman (Asghar Farhadi, Iran)

Jury Prize : American Honey (Andrea Arnold, UK/US)

Best Actress : Jaclyn Jose, for Ma Rosa (Brillante Mendoza, Phillipines)

Best Actor : Shahab Hosseini, for The Salesman (Asghar Farhadi, Iran)

Not only that, but Dolan's film was totally slated by the critics. The press room was full of booing when it was announced.

I also have doubts about the Loach film. Strange that Toni Erdmann, the best received film in Cannes in well over a decade, walked away with nothing.

Yep. I'm almost surprised they didn't find a place for the Penn film at this rate.

The VIFF has announced what appears to be its complete lineup, and here's the full list of Special Presentations, i.e. the highest profile titles in the festival.

American Honey
(DIR. ANDREA ARNOLD, UK/USA)

The Birth of a Nation
(DIR. NATE PARKER, USA)

Elle
(DIR. PAUL VERHOEVEN, FRANCE/GERMANY)

The Girl with All the Gifts
(DIR. COLM MCCARTHY, UK)

The Handmaiden
(DIR. PARK CHANWOOK, SOUTH KOREA)

Human
(DIR. YANN ARTHUS-BERTRAND, FRANCE)

Julieta
(DIR. PEDRO ALMODÓVAR, SPAIN)

Manchester by the Sea
(DIR. KENNETH LONERGAN, USA)

Milton's Secret
(DIR. BARRET BAIN, CANADA)
World Premiere

Moonlight
(DIR. BARRY JENKINS, USA)

Toni Erdmann
(DIR. MAREN ADE, GERMANY)

There are way too many other films to list in different programs, but as usual I'm mostly interested in the Altered States genre programming, which is offering up Under The Shadow, The Love Witch, and In The Valley Of Violence, all of which I'm hoping to see. From the main section I'm most interested in Elle, The Handmaiden, Manchester By The Sea, and maybe Toni Erdmann, but those Special Presentations usually sell out pretty quickly.

I highly recommend Elle, Toni Erdmann and The Handmaiden indeed John, they are all some of the best films of the year, and I can't wait to see Manchester by the Sea so I hope you'll be able to catch that one too.

Nope, they have a bunch of others, though it's the Audience Award winner and runner-up that are the most important.
