Reel Society Of Film Critics Awards 2016 - The Nominees

Post by silversurfer19 »

The first round of votes are in and we have our nominees for the Reel Society Of Film Critics Awards 2016. Between now and March 11th you have the opportunity to submit your final round of votes that will reveal the winners of the awards on Saturday March 12th. Remember you will now be voting on a sliding scale of 5-1 in order of preference, other that in the Best Picture category which will follow the same format, but be on a scale of 10-1. 10 would be your first choice, and then sliding down to your least favourite. You do not have to award a score to every movie, and you need only award what you feel necessary (ie. you can vote just three movies if you like, with one movie a 10, another an 8 and another a 3). If you have any queries on this please let me know.

I will also use this opportunity to ask the committee to put themselves forward for a featurette on one of the Best Picture nominees. If you would like to do one, and it need be no more than a couple of sentences if that's all you can think of, that will be great.

It is definitely an interesting set of nominees. I will go ahead, and volunteer to write a feature for Room.

Good list. One or two I'll try to see and then I should feel confident enough to vote. I'll do a write up on the Martian unless someone else really wants it.

It's a solid set of nominees for sure !
There 's a lot of things I like about them. I'm delighted to see The Hateful Eight gets the recognition the Academy didn't give it. I'm glad about Carol too, and It Follows seems do be a serious force here too that's great.
The only major disappointment I have is the total absence of Michael Mann's Blackhat. Oh and The Good Dinosaur is a better film than Inside Out. That needed to be said.

Boosch beat me to offering a Hateful Eight piece, so I'll offer my service for... I would have said "It Follows" as it's closer to my heart but it's been forever since I've seen the film, almost two years, so I'll go with Carol. This is negociable of course if someone really wanted to write about Carol I can also go with Mad Max.

The only one I'd want to do a write up for is Mad Max.

And it's so strange to me to see Jacob Tremblay nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Room. He's the main character, the entire movie is told from his perspective, and I don't think there's a single scene where he's not featured. Brie Larson disappears for a significant chunk of the movie, so if anyone's performance deserves to be considered as supporting, it's hers.

It's also weird to see that Room didn't get nominated for Best Cast considering all the individual acting awards it's up for. I also nominated Tom McCamus, the sympathetic father figure who helps the kid adjust to the real world, but he didn't make the cut.

Agreed on Tremblay. He was pushed as supporting for the Hollywood awards as he'd never make it as Best Lead Actor. I voted here for him as lead, as it's certainly his story. And for cast. I think Surf tends to put all votes, whether lead or support, together and then put them into whatever category most of us use for the nomination.

I've updated the first post with a list of who is providing featurettes, still no takers for Ex-Machina or Inside Out, though I can always do them if we are really struggling.
