Where's The Hangover in that video? No 2009 retrospective is complete without The Hangover.

Monique! For Precious based on the novel by Sapphire.

Never seen it, the girl looks quite big and might knock me off the stage so I'm off quick!!

I am happy to see her lack of campaigning did not end up hurting her. A truly deserving win.

The words of jas8382:

What do the following have in common: a controversial war, a maverick film director, and unknown trio of actors as the lead characters? They are essential parts in one of the best films of the year. The Hurt Locker is a film that succeeds on many levels, whether it’s the master direction of Kathryn Bigelow, who successfully puts us on the front lines of the Iraq War with one of the most elite Army bomb squads on the field of battle who are portrayed with great skill by Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, and Brian Geraghty. Through their eyes not only did we bear witness to some of most intense action sequences this past year, but also the horrors of war that come with them. The Hurt Locker succeeds where other movies on the Iraq War have failed because it does not play politics and reminds us that we should remember the most important part of this war are the soldiers who risk their lives on daily basis. Nominated for 6 awards tonight including Best Picture this is The Hurt Locker.

Now Numbersix couldn't be here with us but he did have this to write:

While all eyes lies upon the world of Hollywood, we often forget that there's a whole world of foreign cinema out there. And in these cash-strapped times it's foreign cinema that is arguably struggling the most. So spare a thought for this year's selection of foreign films, who have worked hard for the general and critical acclaim that they have received.

As you all probably already know, the nominees for Best Foreign Films are:
White Ribbon
A Prophet
Gomorra
Departures
Ponyo
Coco before Chanel

And I'm delighted to announce that the winner is a truly deserved film. Just when you think that a genre has been done to death, and all we get is a patchwork of exhausted moments and visual tricks, along comes a film that injects life into it. It's a testament to cinema's quality that films can still find new ways of expressing timeless ideas. And so, the winner of the Best Foreign Film award is...

A Prophet

It's a powerful prison drama that took a risk with a completely unknown actor (Tahir Rahim) and manages to be both visually creative and dramatically taut. For anyone who hasn't seen it, or for anyone who thinks they have seen the best prison film already, then check it out immediately.
