Damn their new system, which basically gives priority to more experienced people, as opposed to those of us who wake up at 7am to access their ticket site.

I'll be vocal on Twitter and Facebook and everything to tell them how disappointing this was. I'm sure the ones who got the invitations easily are the ones who could easily get in with their super accred anyway.

After Rust & Bone, I'll take a chance on anything Audiard does, so Dheepan is on my list to see within the next year or whenever its gets a US release date.

With a Palme d'Or under its belt, there's little doubt Dheepan is gonna France's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the next Oscars, so the film will probably get released this fall in the US. In France it's slated for late August, which is usually when Cannes "big" films start getting released here.

Interesting that The Lady in the Van will be shown, especially since Sony pulled it from December.

Meanwhile, I'm wondering if the festival will return to opening with a Canadian-themed or connected film instead of just picking what appeals to American tourists to kick off the festival.

That confirms they will be returning to opening with Canadian-themed product (though Demolition is listed as a US production, the director is Canadian). Now let's hope it stops trying to be like Sundance with the overemphasis of Hollywood that's taken over in recent years.

Meanwhile, does this mean Demolition will move up from its April date?

Demolition's release date was only announced 2 weeks ago. It would be surprising the distrib didn't already know the film would be at TIFF. It would take a huge buzz to make them change their strategy, probably.

Good reviews coming out on Suffragette. I'm telling you guys, it'll win the Audience Award in Toronto and be a huge contender for the Oscars.

Beasts of No Nation is also getting good reviews. Will be interesting to see how a Netflix original will play during awards season.

Black Mass has been getting better reviews than I imagined. Could be Depp's comeback.

Spotlight has only been getting okay-ish reviews. Same for Room.

Black Mass may be a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes but the average critic rating as of last night was only 6.4/10. It could fade by release day and be a victim of its own hype.

I think the Academy may rule Beasts of No Nation ineligible (since it's technically a TV movie).

Meanwhile, I think the more conservative voters will hate Suffragette on sight (much like with Selma). It feels a lot like this year's The Imitation Game: popular with audiences but might not appeal to the voters. Brooklyn feels like the much safer period film with the voters (and it's from Fox Searchlight, who will surely give it an enormous campaign).

What's the definition of a "TV movie?" TV an cinema are becoming so melded. Anything that is created and released in 2015 should count IMO.
Tenet: Criterion Edition. Now with more Backwards Man.

A TV movie is anything that premieres right away on a TV network. Examples include anything that premieres on HBO or BBC. Netflix is considered by both the Emmys and the Golden Globes as a TV channel so I expect the Academy to do the same.

Also, some of the future Netflix film productions (The Ridiculous Six, War Machine, The Do-Over, whatever the Duplass Brothers are making) are being planned solely for Netflix and Beasts of No Nation will be day-and-date (it was originally planned to have a four-week window) so there will be some problems with its eligibility.

There will probably be some lobbying (October Films tried this in 1994 with The Last Seduction, which premiered on HBO four months before hitting theatres) but it's hard to persuade the Academy on such a thing.
