Where's that drummer when you need him? (And no, that's not a Whiplash reference.)

Whiplash ??!!!!
Well here's another surprise !!!!
It clearly wasn't my first choice, but it's still a pretty good choice. An intense film. I was so confident Grand Budapest was gonna win !

As I said before, I don't understand why people thought it was so great.

I think Geezer's featurette explains most of the reasons. It wasn't my favourite, but I don't agree at all it will be forgotten. JK Simmons provided one of the most iconic performances of recent years, and the intensity of it all is unmistakable.

Having said that, Wes Anderson is obviously well loved by the Fantaverse, so much so that Whiplash took the award by a single point. Very close contest indeed.

Here is a recap of the awards this evening for anyone who missed them:

Best Breakthrough Performance: David Oyelowo, Selma
Best Original Screenplay: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Best Adapted Screenplay: Whiplash
Best Actor In A Supporting Role: JK Simmons, Whiplash
Best Actress In A Supporting Role: Patricia Arquette, Boyhood
Best Animated Feature: The Lego Movie
Best Documentary Feature: Life Itself
Best Cinematography: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Best Visual Effects: Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
Best Score: Under The Skin
Best Foreign Language Picture: Force Majeure
Best Cast: Birdman
Best Actress In A Leading Role: Felicity Jones, The Theory Of Everything
Best Actor In A Leading Role: David Oyelowo, Selma
Best Director: Richard Linklater, Boyhood
Best Picture: Whiplash

Well what I love about our awards is that it's quite fairly split and many films were given light. And good ones at that.

Just read through the entire ceremony. Great stuff as always. Thanks for putting it together, Stuart. And thanks to everyone involved. Good times.

Out of curiosity, can you share a breakdown of the points in the Best Picture category?

Just finished watching Citizenfour. Shame I didn't see it earlier as for its journalistic and artistic flaws it's an immensely important documentary whose subjects question the very nature of how we accept our reality.

Anyway, catching up on the last few awards.

Linklater for director. Yep, if there's anything it should be voted for it should be this,as it was his idea and conviction that made the project happen. Again, lots of issues with some of the writing and tone, but what do you expect for a 12 year production. Think the direction in Whiplash, Nightcrawler, Budapest was more confident, distinct, and impressive, but it's good.

And Whiplash for film? That's a pleasant surprise. To address Boosch, while Boyhood may be remembered more than Whiplash, should a film be adored just because of its production model alone? And let's not forget that we have seen examples of this kind of narrative before, even if it was Truffaut following the same character over multiple films, or that German series whose name alludes me (EDIT: Heimat). Whiplash is an intense, cinematic experience. I get the appeal, even if it didn't come together at the end. Better than Birdman, eh NSpan?

A good year in general. Shame Nightcrawler got overlooked here as well. But great work getting it all together Surf.

I would have preferred several movies over Whiplash (Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Selma, Nightcrawler). While many saw an intense movie, all I saw was an annoying lead (I really don't get why people think Miles Teller is a good actor, he's whiny and tries too hard), an actor whose done better work (Simmons' Oscar was a career win more than anything) and a film that was simply overhyped after all its Sundance acclaim (also, I just couldn't buy white people being that obsessed with jazz).

And as I mentioned earlier, I saw the same movie 12 years ago when it was called Drumline (and it wasn't very good then either).
