Films About Children, Featuring Magic, for Adult Audiences

Post by numbersix »

My colleagues...

Doing some research at work, and struggling with this one.

I'm looking for examples of film that are about children, but made for a more adult/arthouse crowd, that feature fantastical or magical elements. These magical elements could be imagined or real. Ideally indie films, not from studios, and need to be in the last decade or so. Examples I have come up with so far

Moonrise Kingdom
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Whale Rider
Pan's Labyrinth
Son of Rambow

Any other examples? I need your vast knowledge on all things film!

Mmmm... the first one that comes to my mind is Jean-Pierre Jeunet's latest, "The Young and prodigious T.S. Spivet". In France it'snot exactly an indie film, but I guess internationally, it's considered one.

I'll throw in a few more :

Undertow by David Gordon Green
Innocence by Lucile Hadzihalilovic
And this one it's a bit stretched but I'll still name it, Mysterious Skin.

Thanks for the suggestions,guys.

Chien, Light the Right One In leans too much towards horror, as opposed to having fantasy or magic elements. Spivet is good. Actually all of Jeunet's films are good, ina way, because they're so fantastical.

Mirrormask and Tideland are definitely in the right area. As are Undertow and Innocence (which I've never heard of).

Ron, not looking for studio pics or animations. Never heard of Passage to Zarahemla. Will check it out.

Thanks guys, and any other suggestions will be most appreciated.

Admittedly, I haven't seen the film, but I first think of Phoebe In Wonderland, the Elle Fanning film from 2008.

The Dance of Reality? Seems to star a child and it's definitely fantasy.

I also found a film called Imagination from 2007, but it seems to be very, very independent. It was released theatrically, but also played in the MoMA, so I'm not sure if it falls into the category of "film" as much as it does "experimental film".

I would say The Fall, but I don't know if the little girl is actually involved in the fantasy sequences or not. Again, haven't seen it.

I haven't seen it but The Dance of Reality would probably fit based on its director (he did do El Topo and The Holy Mountain, very fantasy-driven movies).
