Best Of The Decade, So Far

Post by JohnErle »

Someone on HSX pointed out that the 10s are now officially half-over (how did that happen?) and got people to start ranking their top films of the deacde so far. I figured it would be as good little exercise that people here would want to participate in as well. Here's what I came up with.

1. The Grand Budapest Hotel (tie)
1. Inside Llewyn Davis (tie)
3. The Ghost Writer
4. Take Shelter
5. Killer Joe

Ranking the rest would take all day, but they would definitely come from this shortlist:

All Is Lost
Black Swan
Blue Is The Warmest Colour
Dallas Buyers Club
Django Unchained
Edge Of Tomorrow
Gone Girl
Her
Nebraska
Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
The Conjuring
The Hobbit trilogy
The Social Network
The Woman In Black
Wild

Well THAT actually happened a decade ago ;)

I would need to take a look at my favorite films of 2014, which I haven't really done yet. I'll take a look at this...

Scott Pilgrim Number 1, six?

That's both awesome and, quite frankly, very surprising.

Haha. Well, while it may be surprising, I've written several times before what I think of this movie. Even though it didn't perform very well commercially or criticially I think it will be regarded in a few years as a film that truly represented the reality we exist in, even if in a very stylised way. Edgar Wright's film tend to be far smarter than how they initially seem - the fast-paced jokes aside the Cornetto Trilogy often delve into potent themes of class, nostalgia, friendship, etc. Here, I think the film represents both the self-obsessed narcissism of the typical Gen Y-er but also the positives - being clued in, referential, savvy, etc. It's a true cult film and hopefully one that will eventually get the recognition it deserves.

Scott Pilgrim is definitely #1 for me as well. Top 5 or 10 favorite all-time. Number two is much harder to figure out. 21 Jump Street maybe? Guardians? Apes 1 or 2? About Time and Perks are a couple more in the running...
Tenet: Criterion Edition. Now with more Backwards Man.
