I'm really glad you guys are labeling Carrell as a supporting actor because I was having a really hard time debating between him and Benedict Cumberbatch for the last spot in the lead actor category. Now I can switch him to supporting actor and not lose any more sleep over it.

Thanks for that, I've had a fairly slack year for foreign language titles, only started watching a few recently, but that list has given me a good 6 or so that I need to watch now over the next 6 days!

And regarding categories, I agreed with both of your examples, though like most years I will try to just place the nominee in the category which receives most votes (eg, if Carrell receives 5 nominations for Best Actor but 7 but Best Supporting Actor, I will move all 12 nominations to Best Supporting Actor).

I would add, to that solid list of foreign language films Six has listes, a couple more :
- "Why don't you play in Hell" by Sono Sion
- "2 autumns, 3 winters"
- "Bird People" (don't listen to Six about that one, it's a must-see)

I started writing down my nominees.
I support Carell as a supporting actor (pun intended).
Whiplash is an original screenplay, Academy did a mistake.
As for foreign films I am quite an expert, fact is I'm not sure which ones are eligible according to their american releases. I should make a research.
At any rate, you should take into consideration Venus in fur. In the USA it was released in June and I think it's one of the best.

As far I can tell the screenplay for Whiplash came first, then they made the short film from that same script as way to secure funding for the feature length version of that script.

That's similar to The Raid 2 (the sequel was scripted first but budget reasons shelved that and The Raid was filmed instead) but in the eyes of most, that's still a sequel. Since Whiplash was already released as a short, it falls under "based on another medium".

I'd add A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night to that list of Foreign Language films worth checking out, but I have no idea how anyone would track it down right now.
