This is the criteria I use when considering breakthrough performance:
If the performance could serve as a springboard for their superstardom or a performance by an established actor who is going way out of their comfort zone and conquering a genre they've never done before

I first noticed David Oyelowo in The Butler last year, but that didn't stop me from nominating him this year for his performance in Selma. I did the exact same thing last year with Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan, who'd previously impressed me in Footloose and Chronicle respectively. Though I didn't vote for either of them, this same logic could absolutely be applied the likes of Jones, Redmayne and Riz Ahmed. I honestly think it's kind of dumb to nitpick about what qualify's as a breakthrough performance. As far as I'm concerned, as long as you're not nominating an indisputable A-lister, it's fair game. It should be very interesting to see who comes away with the nod's amidst all this debate.

I did nominate Oyelowo, actually. I wouldn't exactly call The Butler his breakthrough though (with the star wattage that one had, it's easy for some to miss him). I briefly thought of Middle of Nowhere (from the same director as Selma) as a breakthrough for him but so few saw it (and it didn't hit home video until more than two years after it opened) that it at best got him more supporting roles.

Surf, I will have my nominations in by the end of the day tomorrow. Watched two more movies tonight, wanted to get in as many as possible before filling them out.

Tracking says Boyhood is currently in my mailbox, so I may be able to watch it within 12 hours. So FYI I may send in a couple more nominations if I find it deserving.
Tenet: Criterion Edition. Now with more Backwards Man.

I got it, thanks! Just Geezer and UDM remain...

And if you do get a chance to watch Boyhood and want to add a couple of nominees, just remember you will need to remove a couple to make room, W.
