What a weird month... three huge-budget blockbusters that all posted nearly identical stats. Not many epic failures, and only two real positive surprises.
NG
Cheap PTA picks that failed to net a single point:
Filth ($4U) - 7.1 UR.
F
Legend's of Oz: Dorothy's Return ($6U, $6BO) - 0 T5, 0 PTA, 6.7 UR, $8M. Proof that there are animated films most kids don't want to see.
Moms' Night Out ($5U, $4BO) - 0 T5, 0 PTA, 6.9 UR, $10M. Maybe if they'd pushed the religious angle... no, not even then.
D-
Walk of Shame ($8U, $7BO) - 3 PTA, 6.1 UR. Anyone foolhardy enough to take this deserved what they got. (A perfect Bankrupts pick!)
D
Blended ($17U, $17BO) - 4 T5, 0 PTA, 5.8 UR, $42M. Adam, it's time to hire a new agent, or rename your company "Unhappy Madison".
D+
A Million Ways to Die in the West ($21U, $21BO) - 4 T5, 2 PTA, 6.4 UR, $40M. I guess people just don't like westerns, even the kooky ones.
Million Dollar Arm ($10U, $9BO) - 2 T5, 0 PTA, 7.5 UR, $34M. Let this be a lesson: avoid films with "Million" in the title.
C-
The Protector 2 ($3U) - 2 PTA (May only), 5.3 UR. Meh.
B
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($44U, $45BO) - 13 T5, 5 PTA, 7.4 UR, $200M. I know a lot of you consider this to be a roster-breaker, but consider that it earned more T5 points than any film this month except for Maleficent, had a very decent Rating, and still had a multiplier of 4.5. That's not horrible in my opinion, it just that everyone expected a lot more.
We Are the Best! ($3U) - 3 PTA, 7.1 UR. Despite the reviews, this was a tough sell.
B+
Chef ($11U) - 11 PTA, 7.9 UR, $19M. It's a shame that this film was priced as a wide release, because it ended up being the high-PTA film of the month... but it's lack of T5 and BO kept it off most people's rosters.
Palo Alto ($3U) - 4 PTA, 6.6 UR. A decent if not outrageously awesome pick.
A-
Godzilla ($30U, $31B) - 11 T5, 10 PTA, 7.2 UR, $195M. Though it didn't make $200M, double-digits in two categories and a 6.5 multiplier made this a good pick.
Chinese Puzzle ($3U) - 5 PTA, 7.2 UR. Yet another worthy French import.
A
Belle ($4U) - 8 PTA, 7.2 UR. The best indie pick (per dollar spent).
X-Men: Days of Future Past ($32U, $32BO) - 11 T5, 9 PTA, 8.6 UR, $217M. The summer's top earner and Top Rating so far. A smarter pick than Godzilla or X-Men, as its 6.8 multiplier proves.
Neighbors ($20U, $19BO) - 11 T5, 7 PTA, 7.2 UR, $146M. Amidst all the titans came this adult comedy, a genre that has produced more hits than just about any other this year. Perfect counterprogramming.
And the best pick of May:
A+
Maleficent ($26U, $27BO) - 14 T5, 9 PTA, 7.5 UR, $202M. Who saw THIS coming? For less money, this film out-earned Spider-Man AND Godzilla, took tops in T5, and had the best multiplier (7.7 and counting) of the month. Kids just love their fairy tales, no matter how dark.

I didn't trust Maleficent enough. I wwas certain it would go much more unnoticed. Damn. I've picked it once or twice, not much more.

Shryke, what're the stats on ASM2? You forget to include them
I really suck at this game - I passed on Maleficient and X-Men on every slate in lieu of Godzilla or HTTYD2.

Box Office ROI for May:
Maleficent will probably pass Neighbours before the May leagues wrap up, but either pick would have been outstanding, and X-Men and Godzilla both turned out to be great picks as well.

Re: Was It Worth It - The Films of May
I, on the other hand, didn't pick it up on any slate. Never doubt Disney.

We should know that by now and yet there always comes a time when we doubt. Except Brockster.numbersix wrote:Never doubt Disney.
