I think you were a little too nice to Hotel Artemis. Jodie Foster returned to acting after a five-year hiatus for that?

There's such a lack of tension in 7500 that it's almost impressive.

More COVID classics

Breathless: 7/10
Godard's debut is clever and experimental, and revolutionary in many ways. It doesn't quite stand up outside of its context the way Band A Part does, but it's enjoyable to watch from a technical perspective.

The Hitch-Hiker: 6/10
Ida Lupino's noir is a tense classic about two friends on holidays who pick up the wrong guy. It's a very brief film but it's handled quite well.

Ugetsu: 7/10
A classic 1950s ghost story set in feudal Japan. You can see why Kurosawa was so inspired by this tale of 2 sets of couples who flee from their village after being attacked by a rival army. One husband wants to make money from pottery making, while the other craves cash to join the army. Both of which are blinded by their desperation. There's a mild eerieness throughout (and a lot of references to 90s J-Horror Ring), but it's the characterisation that's impressive.

Water-Lilies and Tomboy: both 6/10
Celine Sciamma's first two films demonstrate her ability to direct actors, particularly children well. And her realistic eye still manages to make her films feel more than social-realist bores. Both films deal with gender and identity, but neither feel heavy handed. Instead, they suggest a talent that she quickly developed into two stronger films, Girlhood and Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

I Vittiloni: 8/10
In anticipation of the Fellini box set due out by Criterion this year (hopefully), I caught one of his earlier films, and possibly one of his best. While there's little of his dream-like abilities on display, this is a great tale about a group of young men growing up ina small Italian town, looking up to the cool guy who turns out to be a loser. One of the best coming-of-age films I've seen.

Woman in Chains and Le Corbeau: both 7/10
Henri-Georges Clouzot is one of France's greatest directors. Le Corbeau is a wry thriller about a mysterious villager spreading rumours about everyone's secrets - or are they truths? This film got banned in france for revealing the hypocracy in society, and it's a great Hitchcockian thriller. Then Woman in Chains is one of his later films, a kaleidoscopic drama about a woman's darker sexual desires. It's less about the plot and more about the incredible visuals, colour palette, and camerawork.

La Bete Humaine: 7/10
Renoir's 1938 film sets up a lot of elements that we see in noir, and is impressive for shooting real-life exteriors. The plot is somewhat convention and even nonsensical at times, though.

Tokyo Drifer: 6/10
More colours! This time it's Suzuki's weird-ass yakuza thriller about a heavy who is betrayed. The plot is thrown together, but the approach is very pop-art and enjoyable.

She's Gotta Have it: 7/10
Spike Lee's debut is a daring film about a young, modern woman who refuses to adhere to convention as she juggles three sexual partners. It has a loose but energetic atmosphere and bold vision, demonstrating Lee's ambition and talent. It's one of his best.

I've had Ugestu on my Amazon wishlist for years now, but I've never seen the Criterion Blu-Ray drop under $40. And I've had Breathless sitting on my shelf for ages but never got around to plugging it in.

Hitch-Hiker is a surprisingly gritty film that holds up pretty well, but the version I saw was on a collection of public domain film noirs so the quality was very poor.

I recently watched The Devil's Backbone for the first time, and quite liked it, but I felt a little disappointed, possibly because I'd seen Pan's Labyrinth before and the two films have a lot in common and the later film arguably covered much of the same ground but did it better. But I have to say, that Del Toro box set is easily the best thing I've ever seen from the Criterion Collection and one of the few that seems truly worth the high price tag. Cronos is better than I remembered, but mostly interesting to see the origins of Del Toro's style.

The Hitch-Hiker was restored a few years back. Said restoration is on Blu-ray and apparently, HBO has been showing the new master as well.

The Ugetsu Criterion is defintely worth getting as it contains a booklet which features 3 short stories which inspired the film, which is a great way to present a film. That said $40 is pretty high. I got it here for as part of a 2-for-1 deal so it ultimately cost me about £12.50 which is about CAD 20.

Pretty sure the version of Hitch-Hiker I saw was not restored as the sound was poor between set-ups, but yes, its grit makes it a strong film in that sense, and more modern than was expecting. I'm surprised the makers of the film The Hitcher have never made a direct reference.

I was also disappointed in The Devil's Backbone - it's more sentimental than I was expecting which undermines the tension. Pan's Labyrinth is way better! Haven't seen Cronos but must check it out.

The Barnes & Noble Criterion sale started today but I think they stopped doing international shipping.

I picked up The Qatsi Trilogy finally. Also, Amazon lowered some prices and I had a $25 gift card so I picked up The Circus and The Cranes Are Flying in a little impromptu buy 1, get 1.

If you want anything from the Criterion Sale and aren't in the US, I'll order it, repackage it and ship it to you. Just pay the exact cost it'll cost me. Pretty much everything is out of stock right now, but they should be good next week.

Thanks. I remember you did that at least once before, maybe more than once. I assumed you'd get free shipping to wherever you are, but do you have a rough idea what shipping something to Vancouver would cost?

There's not a lot Criterions out that I'd say are worth the effort, but maybe Ugetsu and Le Samourai if the shipping would be reasonable.
