Is "Breakthrough Performance" supposed to be something good, or could it be something completely awful to me but something that is definitely going to help one's career? I'm thinking of a film like Paul Blart: Mall Cop that pretty much put Kevin James in a position where (if he capitalizes right) he could be the next big comedic actor or even a film like Disturbia which solidified Shia's place as a guy that can sell a show on his name.
Tenet: Criterion Edition. Now with more Backwards Man.

No. I'm sure we are supposed to be honoring performances which have been outstanding, and in that category, a performance from a fairly unknown actor which has become so noteworthy. Just because a bad actory who puts in a poor performance gets a good box office return does not mean he is deserving of the award. Heck, if that was the case Twilight would have dominated the awards last year! And even then, Kevin James had already 'broken through'. He had a headlining role in a summer tentpole Adam Sandler movie.

I'm just saying for that category, it works. Had Robert Patinson won it last year i'd have no problems with it at all. But I also agree with Kevin James already being established, thus not qualifying.

My understanding of the award would be that it's a good performance from an unknown actor or actress that people stand up and take notice. However I think the argument over Kevin James being a known commodity is interesting esp. when you consider we gave the award last year to James Franco.

I knew who Kevin James was before Paul Blart. I have known about him for many years. He has one of the most popular sitcoms on television. I had never heard of James Franco before Pineapple Express.

Seen it, never knew he was in it. Its not like it was his movie. The only three actors i could have named from Spider-man are Tobey, Kirsten and Dafoe.

I think Franco was more well-known before Pineapple Express than Kevin James before Paul Blart.

But I don't think the specifics of the catergory really matter...

i think some more appropriate "breakthrough" nominations would be Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), or Clifton Collins Jr (Sunshine Cleaning, Extract, Star Trek).. Hell, in a way, even Zac Efron (17 Again) makes more sense than Kevin James.

PS. a tenative Best Picture (though still unofficial) top-10 that I'm mulling over (keep in mind that I still haven't seen A Serious Man, Up in the Air, In the Loop, Triangle, The Hurt Locker, Triangle, Harry Potter, Cabin Fever 2, Ong Bak 2, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Where the Wild Things Are, Ponyo, Sherlock Holmes, The Blind Side, or Avatar):

01) The Road
02) The Fantastic Mr. Fox
03) Moon
04) Drag Me To Hell
05) I Love You, Man
06) Observe & Report
07) Inglourious Basterds
08) Watchmen
09) 9
10) Extract
