The Reel Society of Film Critics Awards Ceremony 2011
I bid you welcome, one and all, to the 2011 edition of The Reel Society of Film Critics Awards - a series of awards to celebrate the movies of the past year. Firstly can I thank all the members of the committee who have participated in the nomination process and the submission of featurettes for each best picture nominee, without you it would... well I would have had to do a lot more.
2010 was a year filled with some amazing movie releases and milestones that were reached. It was the first year two movies grossed more than $1 billion in the same year with Toy Story 3 and Alice in Wonderland standing tall, while True Grit proved beyond any expectations that westerns still have a place in 21st Century Hollywood. However I guess it will be greater remembered for it's collection of thought provoking, visually stunning and mature movies which truly pushed boundaries, and they did so with some incredible risks. In a time of recession and playing-it-safe, films like Inception and Black Swan, complex fantasy films which applied brutal innovation and intensities, proving original movies could still be successful in a year filled with sequels and remakes, while there was a real interest in gritty realism, with The Social Network, The King's Speech, The Fighter and 127 Hours still finding a great audience. But smaller films also, like Blue Valentine, Another Year, Winter's Bone, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and The Kid's Are Alright found a loving audience. Cinema 2010 seemed a lot darker, intense, grittier and deeper than 2009, though there were a few exceptions in the form of comic book movies such as Kick Ass, Iron Man and Scott Pilgrim, but it was in no way less thrilling. And so, as we allow the guests to find their seats, I present you with the movies of 2010:
I will be hosting the event today, but I can unceremoniously tell you there will be no sing and dance numbers from myself or my legion of mice working behind the scenes, and I'm fairly certain SNL have not written my script, so expect very little in the way of witty humour. It'll pretty much just be me whistling away while I work, hoping in the vainest of hope that somebody gives a damn...
I'll be presenting the awards in this order:
Best Actor In A Supporting Role
Best Animated Picture
127 Hours Featurette
Best Actress In A Supporting Role
Best Breakthrough Performance
Black Swan Featurette
Best Documentary Feature
Best Original Screenplay

Sorry Boussh, can't say I've seen many of the performances in this category, only Garfield and Damon, but I'm sure Bale is a worthy winner.

Re: The Reel Society of Film Critics Awards Ceremony 2011
I just felt it was a blatant copy of Daniel Day-Lewis's acting style (and Bale didn't even look like the real Dicky Eklund) but that's just my opinion.
And for the people at home, I was cheering for Geoffrey Rush.

I liked the montage of films from 2010, it makes me regret some films that are not nominated.

I'm pretty sure I saw you throw a glass in disgust, there Boussh. And I liked the montage too Chien, it took me a while to find a decent one, but they put the music and images together quite nicely in that one.
But on we go with the next award,
Best Animated Picture
The nominees are:
Despicable Me
How To Train Your Dragon
The Illusionist
Tangled
Toy Story 3
And the winner is....

It's gotta be the only category in which I have seen all the nominees (not sure, but I think). And it's remarkable, because I liked all of them, and some I really love.

In my opinion, Bale gave the best single performance of the year as Dickey. Better than Portman.
Tenet: Criterion Edition. Now with more Backwards Man.

Well, no surprise here. It really is the best animated film of the year, and one of the best films, period. I was never really a huuuge fan of Toy Story, but this one moved me (damn tears in my eyes !) and made me want to rewatch the other two.

Re: The Reel Society of Film Critics Awards Ceremony 2011
Yeah, for me without doubt the best animated movie, one which I watched twice at the cinema and drew a tear on each occasion. Some marvellous characters added to an already brilliant series, and it concluded it in such a beautiful way. A stunning movie.
