Well well well, that's a fourth Korean feature film to see at Cannes this year ! That's great news, although I soon won't have enough time to see other films

Me too !!

The Director's Fortnight line-up is always one I'm really curious about, there are often real gems in it.

The Cowboys is also one, Six, to keep an eye on. It's the first feature by Thomas Bidegain, who is one of the most talented French screenwriters. He's the one who wrote the last three Jacques Audiard films, A Prophet, Rust and Bone and his latest which is in competition, Dheepan.

The Jury who will have to choose the next Palme d'Or has just been announced !

We already knew that the Coen bros would be Head of jury, here are those who will judge the films with them :

- Spanish actress Rossy de Palma
- French actress/director Sophie Marceau
- British actress Sienna Miller
- Mali singer Rokia Traoré
- Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro
- Canadian director Xavier Dolan
- American actor Jake Gyllenhaal

An interesting jury, especially with Del Toro and Dolan.

Hmm, if Sienna Miller is a judge does that mean High-Rise won't be picked for the Competition?

Ha ! I didn't know she was in High Rise. Well then, it certainly means Wheatley's film won't integrate the competition, I'm afraid so yep.

I was convinced Miller's comeback bid died with Unfinished Business (yes, it was filmed before American Sniper but still).

Meanwhile, I was thinking Broad Green would withhold Green Room from festivals and open wide on October 30th. With all of the horror movies opening in October (Victor Frankenstein, Crimson Peak, Goosebumps, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, A Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse), there's definitely room for a more sophisticated one in the market.
Everything on this post is strictly the opinion and only the opinion of Buscemi.

Asia is strong this year, with the three big additions to Un Certain Regard with Weerasethakul, Kawase and (most of all for me who love his films) Brillante Mendoza.
Nicloux's film is a surprising addition, he's a good filmmaker but has never done a film that memorable.

Cannes Film Festival just announced its Closing film, french documentary LA GLACE ET LE CIEL (The Ice and the sky) by Luc Jacquet. He's the one who made "March of the Penguins" a decade ago.

2015 Cannes Film Festival Winners :

Palme d'Or : Dheepan by Jacques Audiard
Grand Prix : Son of Saul by Laszlo Nemes
Best Director : Hou Hsiao Hsien, The Assassin
Best Actress (tie) : Rooney Mara for Carol and Emmanuelle Bercot for Mon Roi
Best Actor : Vincent Lindon for La Loi du Marché (The Measure of a Man)
Jury Prize : The Lobster by Yorgos Lanthimos
Best Screenplay : Michel Franco, Chronic

Caméra d'Or for Best First Film : La Tierra y la Sombra by Cesar Augusto Acevedo

So Jacques Audiard "finally" won the Palme d'Or after all. He wasn't the favorite, so it's kind of a surprise, but his body of work speaks for itself. He was bound to win one sooner or later. A good year once again for French cinema as a French actress and actor won the interpretation prizes, alongside Rooney Mara, this one was a surprise too. Carol was a favourite to win either the Palme or Best Actress for Blanchett.
Sicario won nothing after all despite the acclaim of Six, for which I'm sure he's right. Nothing either for Sorrentino and his Youth.
Lindon's speech was the best, he was very moving. He's one of the finest actors we have in France and he had never won any prize, so it's great he finally won something.
Hous Hsiao Hsien's film is said to be a wonder of filmmaking so it only makes sense it won Best Director. And Son of Saul, despite being from a young unknown who came out of nowhere, had some of the best reviews and word of mouth, it's great he won a prize as important as the Grand Prix, the Silver Palm basically. I guess the biggest losers are the Italian films, none of the three won anything.

I'll put mini reviews of the films I saw in Cannes tomorrow or the next day. I've seen 10 or 11, but none of the competition.

Yeah, big surprise about the Audiard film, although I like what I've read about it. Surprised Carol didn't win as it was the best reviewed film of the festival. But with the Coens heading the jury, we should have known it would be a surprise (apparently the Audiard film gets very violent later on so I can see Joel and Ethan digging it). Son of Saul is no surprise and kudos for an unknown film-maker getting such a big award.

I kinda knew Sicario wouldn't win. It's not a Cannes film.

I'm even more disappointed that I didn't get an invitation to see it on thursday morning. That or The Assassin for which I also applied. Damn you, Cannes administration.
