Burgundys Bankrupts (April)

Post by Ron Burgundy »

Every month, and brought to you by Guiness.

So, nows about the right time to establish a regular blog, also the right time to dish out some bankrupts leagues advice, as we come into the business part of the year, there will be many hits, but its the misses the you want to know all about, so you can grab em while they're ice cold, for your bankrupts slates. Or alternatively, depending on how well i go in the next couple of months, do the opposite!

So April has already seen 2 weekends, with my favourite Bankrupts pick; The Three Stooges collecting a bit over 17M on its opening weekend, 2 PTA, and 4 Top 5 points. slightly worrying? No not reallly, Stooges is priced in between $10 and $13 in all leagues, and you could probably anticipate less than 40M at the end of it all. Not bad, but when you factor in that 4.3 imdb rating, then its much more worth it.

Worth a mention to Lockout, the Guy Pearce sci-fi-action, the rake with big holes took in under 3M on its opening weekend.

Luckily April is this years February, many films with minimal interest and a lackluster box office, The Hunger Games (from March) has won every weekend in April so far this year, with an outside chance of winning another. This weekend may garner another Bankrupts star pick, Opening at 1800 cinemas, Think Like a Man has a great chance of bombing. Already at 4.4 albeit from only 220 user on imdb, id say it actually does have a chance of going lower. The cast is mainly black, but there is no Tyler Perry name attached, can it succeed on the same target audience? Probably not.

Heres some stats:

Think Like a Man
$7-$9 all slates
1800 cinemas
4.4/220 imdb
Sony/Screen Gems (not to be confused with Sony Classics)
Director: Tim Story (Fantastic 4, Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Barbershop, Taxi)
Directors Last film: Hurricane Season (straight to DVD)
Tagline: Four friends conspire to turn the tables on their women when they discover the ladies have been using Steve Harvey's relationship advice against them
Competition: The Lucky One, The Three Stooges, Cabin in the Woods, Titanic, American Reunion, The Hunger Games

Also opening this week is Chimpanzee a documentary opening at 1500 cinemas, The Lucky One mentioned above as the biggest obstacle for any bankrupts pick, Marley another doco though opening in limited release, Darling Companion which at under 5 on imdb could be a good filler pick and Moth Dairies a $2 pick.

Lockout opened to $6 million, not $3 million.

Also, limited releases historically have very weird scoring systems before coming out so take that with a grain of salt. Darling Companion should get to at least a 6 (it's a Lawrence Kasdan film and film fans like him due to The Empire Strikes Back and Silverado) before it's all done.

The Three Stooges should get at least a multiplier of 3. Outside of The Pirates (which has scaled back its marketing campaign and theatre count), there's not much competition for young boys until The Avengers.

And outside of IMDb ratings (which are somewhat racist, since most of the users there are white teen boys), Think Like A Man should do just fine. The book was a best-seller (the author is also in the film and is best known for being the host of Family Feud, which has been returning to form lately) and Kevin Hart is of the big name comedians right now (Laugh At My Pain grossed nearly $8 million in limited release and had one of last year's best limited openings).
Everything on this post is strictly the opinion and only the opinion of Buscemi.
