Get Your Tips Out

Post by numbersix »

As the usual trinity of box-ffice analysts are too busy, what does everyone think The Exorcist: Just Leave Her will make?

I initially was thinking close to $50m, but with the lack of buzz, press, and the awful reviews, I'm going to say around $30m and a $70m cume.

I think horror fans have pretty much turned on David Gordon Green. And with this coming out against a good Saw movie, I'd expect a decent opening day followed by horrible word of mouth while Saw X holds a bit better than usual.

Opening in the high 20's-low 30's, final take under $60 million. The remaining sequels return to being Peacock exclusives.

I had a (very unfinished) column for this week, but I guess this works too ;) .

I expect a opening of around 27 m, and a total of 55 m or so.

As for the limited releases, I don't really see anything but maybe Dicks: The Musical having much potential.
It's not destroying. It's making something new.

The Exorcist: Believer did $2.85 mil in previews, which puts it a bit ahead of Saw X's $2 mil and a bit behind The Nun II's $3.1 mil.

Universal must be panicking right now, given how much they've spent on reviving this franchise.

No doubt. Paying that much for the distribution rights was a real head-scratcher. Despite its massive influence on the genre and rich legacy, The Exorcist brand hasn't shown a lot of BO staying power with its previous sequels/prequels and it always a long shot that the new film was going to put a stop to that trend regardless of how it turned out qualitywise.

I mean, it's clear the price was based on the Halloween model, in the hopes of reinvigorating the franchise.

The problem is that what was made seems to be a carbon copy of the carbon copies, with nothing new to offer. David Gordon Green was the wrong person to helm this.

They also shouldn't have hired the guy behind the Firestarter remake to write the script. Something like this needed an auteur or someone who isn't known for horror but loved the original to make it work.

Meanwhile, the audiences dislike Believer as much as critics do. The Cinemascore is a C. Interestingly, this was also the same Cinemascore for The Exorcist III (considered the best Exorcist sequel nowadays) and Exorcist: The Beginning (the worst in the franchise).

I wouldn't expect Foe to report, as it's an Amazon title. In addition, reviews were pretty poor so if it does report, don't expect a lot.

Amazon does tend to report on their theatrical-exclusive titles.

I'm trying to figure out how The Blind increased its take this week. The film lost over 400 theatres but its take went up 30% from last week. Did the Robertsons do a big promotional push or something?

BOM's number is wrong. Both Deadline and The Numbers have it at $3.1 mil, which is still an impressive drop considering its theater losses

With such negative reception, Universal should be seeking out anyone other than that hack David Gordon Green to direct the next one. It's frankly nuts that he was handed the keys to this franchise after the reception to his last 2 Halloween films.
