Joker has had great WOM, which is surprising considering how bleak it is.

Weekend Estimates

Top 10:
5 points - Joker, $55.0M
4 points - The Addams Family, $30.3M
3 points - Gemini Man, $20.5M
2 points - Abominable, $6.2M
1 point - Downton Abbey, $4.9M
Hustlers, $3.8M
Judy, $3.3M
It: Chapter Two, $3.2M
Jexi, $3.1M
Ad Astra, $1.9M

PTA:
5 points - Parasite, $125K
4 points - Joker, $12.6K
3 points - Pain and Glory, $12.6K
2 points - The Addams Family, $7.6K
1 point - Gemini Man, $5.6K

Joker is nearly at $200M and should pass It: Chapter 2 by midweek. Who saw THAT happening?

Hustlers will hit $100M, also by midweek.

Downton Abbey will hit $90M before it's done. $100M seems unlikely.

With a PTA that high, will be very curious to see what Parasite's cume will be. It's been a long time since a foreign language film broke $10m. Can this film do it?

I've seen the Parasite trailer before nearly everything lately. The director's had some films do well domestically but those were English language films. Personally, I think this week's success (it sold out every show at the IFC Center's small auditoriums) is due to the Palme d'Or win. I don't think it will hit $10 million but $5 million is a possibility as Neon's titles seem to die in expansion.

Anything's possible with Parasite.
In France, no film in Korean language had ever made more than 320.000 entries in theaters, it seemed to be the ceiling for successful Korean films, the one that couldn't be broken. Everytime a Korean film had success, it got between 250.000 and 320.000, be it Spring, Summer, Fall..., Train to Busan, The Handmaiden, Oldboy, The Host...

Parasite is closing in on 1.7 million entries here. It was released in early June and is still playing in half a dozen theaters in Paris. It's made 5 times the score of the biggest Korean success up until now. Sure the Palme d'Or win helped, but it wasn't just that, because in fact, it's been more successful at the box-office here than most Palme d'Or winners in the last 25 years. Only 2 or 3 Palme d'Or winners made more than Parasite. It even made more than the French films that won it.
If the French's huge and unpredictable success of the film is any sign, then Parasite might do much more than we might expect at the US BO. I'm beginning to regret to picking it for the draft.

I think that a good comparison for Parasite (though on a much, much smaller level) would be Get Out.

A genre film with social commentary that shows incredible staying power and awards attention.
It's not destroying. It's making something new.
