Apparently, Warner Bros. actually cut its marketing budget from an even bigger amount. A recent estimate suggests Warner Bros. and Amazon stand to lose $40-50 million on the film.W wrote:Holy Hell. They spent so much on marketing Goldfinch. And it’s going to not even crack $3M OW?
This might have been better off as a miniseries. Something like this had limited audience appeal as a theatrical film (I'm reminded a lot of The Kite Runner, possibly the quintessential example of how being based on a popular book doesn't guarantee box office success) and truly needed something to play to more than just rich people who read everything on the New York Times Bestseller list (which by the way just means you sold a lot of copies). The Goldfinch didn't have that.
