Weekend Estimates

Top 10:
5 points - Ralph Breaks the Internet, $25.8M
4 points - Dr. Seuss' The Grinch, $17.7M
3 points - Creed II, $16.8M
2 points - Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, $11.2M
1 point - Bohemian Rhapsody, $8.1M
Instant Family, $7.1M
The Possession of Hannah Grace, $6.5M
Robin Hood, $4.7M
Widows, $4.4M
Green Book, $3.9M

PTA:
5 points - The Favourite, $32.5M
4 points - Anna and the Apcolaypse, $10.0K
3 points - Shoplifters, $7.5K
2 points - Ralph Breaks the Internet, $6.4K
1 point - Creed 2, $4.7K

Let's hear it for the animated fare!

Predictions/observations:

1. Ralph Breaks the Internet is at $120M. $200M seems like a stretch, esp. if Spider-Verse is a huge hit.

2. The Grinch is at $200M. Given its Xmas theme, it may have the momentum to get to $250M, but not much more.

3. Creed II will easily $100M.

4. Fantastic Beasts will not even crack $170M.

5. Bohemian Rhapsody, however, easily will.

6. A Star is Born continues to inch toward $200M.

I know it's easy to say I told you so - but I really find it stunning that both the Star Wars and Harry Potter movie worlds are struggling so greatly. They're both just as popular, if not more so, than ever in other platforms. But when it comes to movies they have not got it figured out right now. Wild.

Well, it's a question of timing and saturation. And global.

Solo didn't work because it was too soon after the divisive The Last Jedi. Had it been left to this Xmas it may have fared better. Though it didn't help that it looked and felt lazy. Episode IX will do huge business again, probably more than TLJ but less than TFA.

As for Potter, fans had something like 9 features, and the spin-off wasn't that welcome. People are tired of it. But Fantastic Beasts 2 should do well enough outside of the Us to justify itself and a sequel. Whether the series can reach a 5th is a larger question.

Sometimes, milking your franchise to such that all that's left in the teat of goodwill is a drop of sour spin-off isn't the best idea.

It's saturation, but I think it's moreso that these two entries are not well done. They scream of cash-grab, and people aren't so keen to just throw their money at their favorite IP if they see it's junk.

Law of diminishing returns always applies to spinoffs.

I think Episode 9 will be a huge hit, but unless the quality really picks up, I don't see any of these Fantastic Beasts movies doing as well as the first.

I still think it was foolish to call Episode VIII The Last Jedi when we all knew Episode IX was coming (besides, I'm sure there are previously unseen Jedi lurking in the shadows). For once, actually mean it when Last or Final is in the title.
