SIX TIPS, OR HOW TO PLEASE YOUR SLATE – THE FILMS OF 11/30

Post by numbersix »

The turkey tasted good this Thanksgiving, particularly for the major studios who got extra gravy with their big flicks: Disney took top spot with their highly original film, sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet (which, ironically, it didn’t despite the marketing team’s meme attempts); MGM performed above expectations with their highly original film, sequel Creed 2; Universal saw a strong hold with their highly original film, another remake of The Grinch; and Warner saw a decent performance from their highly original film, Harry Potter spin-off sequel Fantastic Beasts 2. But in case that originality is getting to you, fear not because Lionsgate’s expensive Robin Hood origin story slipped on its staff and bombed with a 5-day opening of $14m. The only hope for fans of anything beyond sequels and reboot was in The Favourite’s incredibly impressive limited opening, which earned a PTA of over $100K.

But that was last week, and who cares about the leftovers, we’ve now officially entered Awards Season and here are the first two contenders.

This year there has been talk of horror getting a place in the awards ceremony. After A Quiet Place and Hereditary comes The Possession of Hannah Grace (Sony). Definitely not influenced by The Autopsy of Jane Doe, it deals with a cop working in a morgue who is terrorised by a cadaver, and stars potential awards-winners Shay Mitchell and Grey Damon. If you think this is a studio dump, remember that opening ambitious films on traditionally weak weekends has often paid off, and this could be the next Avengers: Infinity War but with added golden statues. There are no reviews out yet, because critics are so blown away that they’ve nothing bad to say. This is your best chance to win the game, being only a steal at $2 in BO and $3/4 in Ultimate. As you picture sitting on top of the Full Year Super Leagues, will you remember that it was all down to this movie? Time will tell… it will tell you “no, never”.

But wait, could there be an even better choice? Anna and the Apocalypse (Orion) is a mash-up of mash-ups. Sure, it’s another zombie outbreak film. But it’s set during Christmas! And there’s romance! And it’s funny! And it’s a musical! It is getting great reviews (88% on RT), and Orion, having released an impressive 8 films in the last 3 years, are ready to return to the days of Dances With Wolves (somehow Chien heard me type those words). No theatre count yet, but it costs between $2 and $4 in Ultimate and BO. So could this be the first musical rom-zom-com to win an Oscar? Time will tell… it will tell you “no, of course not”.

Real Predictions for the Weekend

1. Ralph Breaks the Internet - $28m
2. Creed 2 - $17m
3. The Grinch - $16m
4. Fantastic Beasts 2- $14m
5. Bohemian Rhapsody- $8m

PTA: The Favourite, Shoplifters, Ralph 2, The Grinch, Anna and the Apocalypse

Next week Boosch takes on a trio of indie darlings: Ben is Back, Mary Queen of Scots, and Vox Lux. They won’t have any zombies singing and dancing. Unless you think Julia Roberts is that old.

All I got out of the trailer for The Possession of Hannah Grace (besides how unoriginal it looks) is "Who is Shay Mitchell and why is she getting above-title billing?" I'm going to say it plays like another medical-themed horror film released post-Thanksgiving years ago called Awake did: okay opening (it actually opened in fifth) followed by fast drops.

What does it say about me that I actually want to see Anna and the Apocalypse?

I've seen Anna and the Apocalypse so I'll advise you to not get your hopes too high about it, Walleye.

Ah really? Bummer. I really hoped it had that Buffy The Vampire Musical episode feel. Maybe I'll just go rewatch that one!

Theater counts:

The Possession of Hannah Grace - 2,065
Anna and the Apocalypse - 5

Yep, that's it. No estimates for next week, which features zero wide release films.

With nothing coming out for two weeks (literally) the only things I haven't seen that are around here are (a lot of them are fairly far away):

Hannah Grace
The Grinch
Robin Hood
Front Runner
Hate U Give

Even the art theater has nothing new. I really don't want to see The Grinch by myself... Maybe The Favorite will expand here next week.

Anyone know what the movie Buttons is? It seems to be playing in a bunch of theaters around here next week. So probably wide.

Just looked it up. It's a Fathom Events exclusive with Angela Lansbury and Dick Van Dyke (both also in Mary Poppins Returns).
