Searching has been well reviewed and it won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize at Sundance. However, such winners tend to be niche-appealed (last year's winner, Marjorie Prime, had a name lead in Jon Hamm but didn't manage much audience interest). I expect a good debut (I'm going to say $20,000 per theatre) but it's more than likely too highbrow for a mainstream audience.

And I see next week's counts weren't posted:

Kin - 2,100
Operation Finale (opens Wednesday) - 1,800
The Little Stranger - 475 (not promising for Lenny Abrahamson's follow-up to Room)
Ya Veremos - 350 (downgraded from a wide release)

Searching expands to 1,100 theatres.

yeah i think Searching can nab a few PTA points this weekend.

And im feel sorry for Happytime, the trailer looked pretty funny, 2 weeks ago i was certain this was going to be this years Hitmans Bodyguard. Now im unsure what audiences will go see, as apparently more and more people look on rottentomatoes.com before buying a ticket.

Searching should win this weekend. A social-media savvy techno-thriller with good reviews and good WOM from the fest circuit, released by Screen Gems/Sony? That's a good one. Might even nab a T5 point next week due to the poor state of the other wide releases.

Predictions
1. Crazy Rich Asians $17M
2. The Happytime Murders $12M
3. The Meg $11M
4. MI - Fallout $7M
5. Christopher Robin $6M

PTA: Searching, The Wife, Crazy Rich Asians, We the Animals, John McEnroe

That hold for Crazy Rick Asians is ridiculous! And a great debut for Searching. When's the last time a 9 screen movie got that high of a PTA - usually 4 is the magic number.

Isle of Dogs got a $60,000 PTA out of 27 theaters ;) But it's still indeed a very solid number from Searching.
