My opinions: I was seriously hoping for a 50% drop on this. The fact that the average American would rather see this than Kick-Ass is saddening.
It's not sad at all, seeing as how Date Night is the better movie. You guys have to realize that a relatively small percentage of Americans are interested enough in graphic comic book violence to drop $10 a ticket (at least).
To each his own, though.

Date Night may be unoriginal, but it is enjoyable.
Plus, Date Night and Kick-Ass are in no way comparable. One has two big stars, the other has none. One is PG-13, one is R. One is barely 100 minutes, one is almost 130 minutes. Date Night was always destined to be more popular than Kick Ass. (And hell, that might even be wrong. The WOM seems to be better for Kick Ass so it may very well outgross Date Night.)

Um.... Nicolas Cage? Maybe he's not in high regard as he once was, but I still think he qualifies as "big". Everyone knows him, everyone recognizes him. And though he may be at the bottom of the "A" list, he's still on it. If he wasn't, he wouldn't be getting 3-5 big-budget projects a year.
I guess you have a point but it still saddens me that people won't go watch movies with balls and some point of originality* (unless it's Inglourious Basterds, that was great AND people saw it).
Meanwhile, length usually doesn't mean much. Eight of the ten highest grossing movies of all-time ran over two hours (E.T. was five minutes short of two hours so it comes very close to nine).
*- Though Kick-Ass is an adaptation, it is a satire of superheroes and superhero cliches. Think of how many superhero movies that have done that.

I'll be God-damned. Though it is fairly close, there's every possibility Dragon and Kick-Ass might change position when the numbers go final. Same possibility with Date Night and Death at a Funeral.
Top 5

Wow. I was fairly close in my predictions this time. Score!
PTA:
5 points - Death at a Funeral
4 points - Kick-Ass
3 points - How to Train Your Dragon
2 points - La Mission
1 point - Date Night
As expected, The Joneses' 193-theater opening dropped it way out of contention for PTA. Handsome Harry also missed the cut.
User Ratings:
Kick-Ass - 8.5
Death at a Funeral - 4.4
The Joneses - 6.5
Handsome Harry - 8.4 (so there's at least some cosolation if you picked this)
Yep. Kick Ass is #1 and Dragon is #2 with the actuals, $19.8 million vs. $19.6 million. Cheap though, because Lionsgate included the Thursday shows for Kick Ass in its weekend gross which they are not supposed to do. Dragon really should be #1. It could very well win next weekend though.
Snakes On A Plane did the same thing four years ago when the box office turned out to be a huge disappointment (the film opened to $13 million despite predictions in the $30-40 million range).
