Ferdinand should hold well though. The best compare was generally considered to be the last Alvin and the Chipmunks and that held decently after a soft opening.

Yeah Alvin is the best comparison as it opened in front of Star Wars at the same period two years ago. It made a bit better, over 14M, and got to 85M overall. But it does mean that Ferdinand will stay far from $100M, so it is disappointing after all as it felt for a while now that it could achieve that.
