This may be obvious to most of you, but I'm still fascinated at how the Box Office is a little more unpredictable than I think. I thought Kong could have easily crapped out, even with a big studio push, and done 100 mil tops. Whereas all the publicity and hype for Power Rangers and Ghost in the Shell (even bad publicity is good publicity) made me think they would perform much better than they've done. The Boss Baby had so little buzz compared to Sing or SLoP but it's been the top of the Box Office for 2 weeks. It's just a little nudge here or there and it makes all the difference to how a film does and, perhaps more importantly, how it's perceived. For me, at least, it makes this game we do fun and hard to win.

Ghost in the Shell was DOA in the US. Fans of the original were going to avoid it, the concept had been done better domestically as The Matrix, and it was simply a textbook example on how not to remake a beloved foreign film. Also, no one seemed to learn from Life of Pi.

Power Rangers was always bound to be a one-and-done film. It resembled so little of the original series (which is still on the air) that it hurt its appeal to spread past the fans who will watch the show religiously (and that includes Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie). Luckily for Lionsgate, they only distributed the film (Saban put up most of the budget).

As for The Boss Baby, it comes to show that parents of young children will take them to see anything with a large marketing campaign. Outside of Pixar, the quality family films (like Shaun the Sheep Movie or A Monster Calls) get little notice but a glorified remake of Baby Geniuses can make millions. Also, why must so many of these films have jokes involving fecal matter (especially the consumption of it) or bodily functions? Back in the past, pushing the envelope actually meant something and it was often a lot more subtle.

Power Rangers hasn't come out in South Korea, Japan or China yet. If the grosses there are strong enough there, I wouldn't be surprised if Lionsgate greenlit a sequel.

Looks like the Fast and Furious franchise is starting to slow down. Except in overseas, where it made $432m in one weekend!

The 7th was an anomaly, because of Walker's death, that tragedy amped up the film's profile. The 8th goes back to the usual score of the franchise.

I'm wondering if Universal will rethink the Easter strategy. Before Furious 7, the biggest Easter opening had been $61 million (Clash of the Titans). And Batman v. Superman was always going to be a big film so I feel that was more the exception than the rule (I bet Universal was really hoping this would beat the Easter record).

Universal would be smart to consider placing some of their animated titles at Easter every other year as traditionally, Easter has been a slot for word-of-mouth and wide appeal-type films (examples including The Matrix, Bridget Jones's Diary, and more recently, Heaven is for Real) instead of gunning for monster openings (also, Easter openers for many years opened on Wednesday).

Meanwhile, it's interesting to note that no one mentioned the total failure of the family-themed entry (as if things weren't crowded enough) for this holiday weekend in Spark, a film originally planned for wide release that got reduced to just 365 theatres with no marketing whatsoever, which opened to an abysmal $112,352 (yes, the result was so bad that we already got an exact total) for a PTA of $308. This shows us once again that if you're a small animation studio, don't try sci-fi. It also makes me wonder if Open Road will hold on to their other animated features on the docket (one sequel, one remake, one toy-themed film, all likely with limited appeal).

Lastly, was Spark the first film to reduce in price in all three months it was in the Super Leagues?

Bingo. If if not mistaken, I believe Fate of the Furious was actually the 2nd highest opening of the franchise.

Yeah, but it only beat Fast 6 because it was a 4-day weekend opener.

Can't believe this franchise, I'm sure I would have been way off whatever I predicted. We are all better at our household. I've cleaned up enough puke for a few years now
