Channel Ron: Episode Warm Milk- Films of 11/4/16

Post by Ron Burgundy »

Greetings my humble readers, Burgundy reporting here- in a shocking new story-
(pictures pending)

Dr Strange eyeing down some kind of Ridge, where they be Trolls armed with Hacksaws!

Heres the inside story:

Dr Strange (Buena Vista)
Action/Adventure
3,800+ cinemas release (majority in 3D)
Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelson, Benedict Wong, Tilda Swinton, Michael Stuhlbarg & Benjamin Bratt.
Directed By: Scott Derrickson (Sinister 1 & 2, Deliver Us From Evil)
Written By: Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose), Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Passengers), C. Robert Cargill (Sinister)

With such a cast (diverse and talented), a brave director choice and a solid writing team behind Marvels newest creation, Dr Strange- not to mention the buzz, this film is a given winner for the weekend and maybe even the next. RottenTomatoes has been reporting very good reviews, unlike many Superhero movies of late, all this adds up to a great opening and legs that might be crippled by bigger films coming up. Though with good reviews, you can place a lot of confidence in over 15 top 5 points, at least 7 PTA and a very nice imdb rating - something around the 8 mark, it all hangs on the matter of $$$.

Trolls (Fox)
Animation
4000+ cinemas (prevalent in 3D)
Cast: Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Zooey Deschanel, Chistopher Mintz-Plasse, Russel Brand, Gwen Stefani, James Corden, Jeffrey Tambor & John Cleese.
Directed By: Walt Dohrn (Spongebob Squarepants), Mike Mitchell (Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, Sky High, Shrek Forever After)
Written By: Jonathan Aibel (Kung Fu Panda 1, 2 & 3, Spongebob Squarepants Movie: Sponge Out of Water), Glenn Berger (Same as Jonathan Aibel), Erica Rivinoja (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2)

A massive opening much in 3D- what does this say...Well $20m+ you can check off no matter the competition. The team behind it apparently brought you Shrek, though the writers dont suggest that- so dont think this is an automatic hit. It will be big, probably big enough for $100Mil+, but its not a cheap commodity in game either, you're looking at about $20- and with a floor not high enough, it is a big risk to kill your dream slate. Take it with balls, else take the safe route and stay clear.

Hacksaw Ridge (Lionsgate)
Action/Drama/War/Biography/Romance
2,800+ cinemas
Cast: Teresa Palmer, Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Vince Vaughn, Hugo Weaving & Milo Gibson
Directed By: Mel Gibson
Written By: Andrew Knight (The Water Diviner), Robert Schenkkan (The Quiet American)

When i read in imdb.com that the film held up a 10 minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, i knew that Mel was back. In a way, he never really left in a directors chair- the man has won a best director oscar, and has had his life problems. Great reviews so far on rottentomatoes.com suggest the rating holds up and none of the films next weekend open as wide as this does. It doesnt cost much but do you have room for a movie like this? It wont generate you top 5 and PTA, the rating and BO could do well for you, perhaps even surprise going by the postive reviews. Risk level- medium.

And for our limited release:
(apologies for missing The Eagle Huntress- Sony Classics doco which came out earlier in the week)

Loving (Focus)
Drama
4 cinemas
Cast: Joel Edgerton, Ruth Negga, Will Dalton
Directed & Written By: Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter, Midnight Special)

Taken straight from imdb.com:
Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple, are sentenced to prison in Virginia in 1958 for getting married
I dont think it needs any more explanation than that- its not an easy subject- which im sure Nichols has handled, given the reviews so far. It is a $5 bomb in ultimate, so you would want to be absolutely sure this takes the cake this weekend with more next. My gut says it will beat Dr Strange with the perfect 4 cinema release, if you missed Moonlight- this is a nice cover

Top 5

1. Dr Strange - $75m
2. Trolls - $35m
3. Hacksaw Ridge - $18
4. BOO - $11
5. Jack Reacher - $6

PTA
Loving, Dr Strange, Hacksaw Ridge, Trolls, Moonlight

Next week we have Walleye with a very strange but interesting batch of films including Arrival, Almost Christmas, Shut In, Elle & Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. Stay Tuned San Diegofantaversians!

Good predictions, there, Ron, even if a bit late ;)

Mid 70s for Dr Strange feels right, although part of me thinks the buzz will make it hit the low 80s. Trolls is tracking higher. I'd be shocked if it wen past 40m this weekend, but I wouldn't rule it out. That would mean a 120m cume which isn't bad. You're a bit high on Hacksaw, I'm thinking mid teens but with a great hold across the following weeks.

And yeah, Loving is guaranteed top spot this weekend, but next it has to contend with both Elle and Billy Lynn, so it might struggle to make more than 8 PTA points, depending on how it expands.

1. Dr Strange - $81m
2. Trolls - $36m
3. Hacksaw Ridge - $14
4. BOO - $7 (gonna drop hard now Halloween is past)
5. Inferno - $6.5

Thus midnight numbers in.

Dr Strange made $9.4 mil, putting it ahead of Iron Man 2, Thor 2, and Antman, and just behind Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America 2.
Trolls made 900K, which is twice what Storks did and just over what Angry Birds made.
Hacksaw Ridge opened to 750K. Comparisons are tough, although BOM use Fury as a comparison (1.2m with an OW of 23.7).

It's going to be a bumper weekend for the openers, I suspect.

Lots of money this week - and then I think a low week for the new ones next week. Makes my predictions tough.

Saw it in IMAX last night, visually definitely worth it, some parts are like a hallucinatory dream, and the Fx very good. Decent movie too though it never really veers from the Marvel staple origin story.

Limited release numbers are not in yet. Billy Lynnhas one over 70,000 so will win the weekend in that category.
