TAKE IT TO THE BANKS - THE FILMS OF 6/24

Post by BanksIsDaFuture »

No column this week, gentlemen. :(

This weekend's wide releases...

Independence Day: Resurgence (Fox)

The Will Smith-less sequel continues Emmerich's reign of destruction with nothing else to offer audiences, and judging by the low RT, it may have peaked years ago with 2012.

Quick Prediction - $49M opening, $110M total. 6 Top 5 points, 5 PTA points.

---------------------------------------------

Free State of Jones (STX)

The Matthew McCoughnahey-led slave drama hopes to counterpoint the big explosions and animated fare clogging up multiplexes. However, even the beloved 12 Years A Slave could manage $50M in Oscar season, so it's hard to think this wanna-be can come close.

Quick Prediction - $13M opening, $33M total. 1 Top 5 point, 0 PTA points.

----------------------------------------------

The Shallows (Sony)

Blake Lively gets her own sexy, bikini-clad version of Open Water from the director of Liam Neeson's last several shitty action movies. It surprisingly has the best reviews of all the releases this week, and could find an audience over the upcoming holiday. One review claimed this was Lively's Revenant, but that seems a bit much.

Quick Prediction - $15M opening, $55M total. 3 Top 5 points, 1 PTA points.

NOTE: The Neon Demon, from Broad Green and Amazon Studios, is also scheduled to open in wide release (700+), but is not included in our game.

This weekend's limited releases...

Swiss Army Man (A24)

One of the weirdest films of the year, Paul Dano is deserted on a island and is contemplating suicide before coming across the corpse of Daniel Radcliffe. His adventures with the farting, vomiting dead body makes him reconsider and look at life from a new angle. Even though it was booed out of Cannes, A24 specializes in off-beat and it should easily take the cake this weekend.

5 PTA points OW, 9 PTA total.

Wiener-Dog (IFC)

It's got a well-known indie director in Todd Solondz, and it did find room for indie-Jennifer-Aniston Greta Gerwig. It has the potential to give Swiss Army Man a run for its money, but I think it will be overshadowed.

2 PTA points this weekend, 4 PTA total.

Eat That Question: Frank Zappa In His Own Words (Sony Classics)

A Z-list celebrity documentary, it will receive no PTA points.

The Predictions For The Weekend of June 24th-June 26th:

1. Finding Dory - $71M
2. Independence Day: Resurgence - $49M
3. Central Intelligence - $16M
4. The Shallows - $15M
5. Free State of Jones - $13M

PTA: Swiss Army Man, Finding Dory, Independence Day: Resurgence, Wiener-Dog, The Shallows

Next week gives us another plethora of releases to celebrate our Independence from those EU-hating weirdos across the pond: The Legend of Tarzan swings back into theaters, Disney's The BFG comes in under the radar, and the annual Purge commences again with The Purge: Election Year.

I should have drafted The Secret Life of Pets. I hate American audiences.

You shouldn't have drafted the sequel to a 20-year old movie that most people of my generation and younger don't give two shits about ;)

That's the problem when you think you're still 20 and so you think everyone from 20 will want to see it. You suddenly realize you ain't 20 anymore.

It's sad really. At work I'll throw out a funny line from Caddyshack, Spaceballs, or even as recent as something like Robinhood: Men In Tights in our morning meeting and more than half the people I work with have no idea what I'm talking about. That's when you know you're getting old.

OR, I was laughing b/c Warren G is touring again, and I was joking about going, and starting going into the song "Regulate" and some of the people I work with were like, "Who is Warren G?" I lost my shit.

I can still rap that whole song BTW...love it.

FML.

It's still hilarious to me, even after all these years. All the Mel Brooks movies are. They hold up well in my opinion.

I'm unexpectedly going out of town tonight, guys so I won't be able to have a column up tomorrow as planned.

If someone would like to step in this week, that'd be great. Or I can do a mini one Thursday night.
