With all the hype, WB will be very, very worried if Man of Steel opens under $100M.

Man of steel brought in 21m from the 7pm walmart showings(12m) and midnights(9m), take that with a grain of salt though because walmart prepaid that 12m dollars a while ago and even selling them at a discount were barely able to sell any tickets so come last night they just started passing them out to anyone that would take them for free. Each screen that was bought out had 150 seats sold. In my city only about half seats were filled out of the 4 screens. I'm sure some cities did better but there was absolutely no advertising for it other than the scanners having the poster when you walked inside of walmart. They probably got some decent pr from people saying walmart gave them free passes to MOS but I'm sure they ended up losing 3-4m from it.

I'm shocked by those numbers to be honest, I went to the midnight IMAX showing at my local theater and it was at least 60% empty. The other 2D and 3D showings weren't particularly busy either.

It kinda sucks for our purposes that freaking Wal-Mart padded 12 million to Man of Steel's gross that otherwise might not have been there. Not that it matters at all to anyone other than the handful of us that play this particular game, but its still kinda cheap. No other movie gets a 12 million dollar bonus before it ever starts selling tickets.

What I heard: "Boo hoo... I'm scared now over $12 million." ;). This may be the future of the game when it comes to tent poles (and anything else you want at Wal-Mart). Taking what the lost in ticket sales and adding what they sold in their Super Man stuff, I wonder if they broke even.

Deadline updates:
1. Man of Steel $132 m (including $12 m Wal-Mart)
2. This is the End $21 m 3-day, $32.3 m 5-day
3. Now you See Me $11.5 m (10 T5 so far)
4. The Purge $8.5 m (-83%... Ouch)
5. FF6 $8.4 m (15 T5)

I was worried when the negative reviews came out, but the cinema score is an A-, so we'll see...

Friday Estimates:

Man of Steel, $44M
This is the End, $6.8M (made $12.3M Wed-Thu)
Now You See Me, $3.3M
The Purge, $2.9M
Fast & Furious 6, $2.7M
The Internship, $2.3M
Epic, $1.8M
Star Trek Into Darkness, $1.4M
The Hangover Part III, $855K
Iron Man 3, $736K

Weekend Projections:

Man of Steel, $111M ($123M including midnight shows)
This is the End, $21M ($33.3M 5-day)
Now You See Me, $10.7M
Fast & Furious 6, $9.3M
The Purge, $8.5M (-75%)
The Internship, $7.5M
Epic, $6.2M
Star Trek Into Darkness, $6.0M
After Earth, $3.8M
Iron Man 3, $3M
The Hangover Part III, $2.7M

Expectations:

Man of Steel should eclipse $300M easily.
Now You See Me should break $100M.
Epic will break $100M, with an outside shot at $120M.
Star Trek Into Darkness probably has about $15M left in it.
Iron Man 3 will pass $400M on Monday.

Other news:

The $44M opening day for Man of Steel is the highest ever for a reboot (beating Amazing Spider-Man). It took Superman Returns three days to make that much in 2006.

If the projections hold, Man of Steel will break Toy Story 3's record for highest June OW ever ($110.3M). It will all depend on whether the NBA Finals (Game 5, a decisive game) cut into its Sunday take.

I totally forgot about the NBA finals, since I'm Canadian and couldn't care less, and Man Of Steel also has to contend with the Stanley Cup Finals, which are not on the same level as the NBA finals in the US, obviously, but are up 15% over last year, so that probably ate into the Saturday night audience, especially in Boston and Chicago and Canada.

MOS should still manage the best OW in June, but Friday was not the best opening day in June. That still belongs to Transformers: Revenge Of The Whatever.
