But it's the first time since the first Oscars that the potential Best Picture winner is a black & white silent film ! There is no precedent for the genre in decades ! Every week there are films that get released with extatic reviews and are seen by a few hundred people only. Every year there are arthouse films that win lots of prizes in festivals and end up collecting a few thousand dollars at the BO.
And every year, the Oscar winner is an american film with either a marquee director, or A-listers in the cast, or at least recognizable actors in the leads. The Artist has none of that. I don't understand how you can compare it to just another Academy Award nominee/potential winner. It is such an oddity in the Oscar race.

Because the only reason people are showing up, is the award buzz. It's actually a pretty good example of just how far award buzz can push a film, that otherwise not many would have taken the time to see.

Lots of movies have great reviews and no one shows up. Just ask Boush.

And thank God Geez, it proves that there is still space in theaters for films running on buzz and word of mouth and good reviews, and not just because a studio paid 80 million dollars to put posters and trailers on every screen of the country. Doesn't it reassure you a bit about the future of cinema ? ;)

To Geezer, every film needs to overstylized and filled with explosions and toilet humor.

Like Harry Potter ? Like HARRY POTTER ? Seriously ? You're telling me that you consider Harry Potter's success to be due to word of mouth and great reviews and festival buzz ? Or have I missed something here ?

In fairness, that 13-minute diarrhea sequence in Drive really ruined the mood for me.
