Wow. It definetly was a flop. All 6 star wars films made big money, but Clone Wars didn't.
Current Film Watchlist:

Spy X Family: Code White
The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare
The Fall Guy
Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes

80% Puss in Boots? I didn't expect that.

BOM hasn't updated in a couple days, so here are the (early) weekend estimates from BoxOffice.com:

Puss in Boots, $36M (this would make it the lowest OW for a DreamWorks film since Bee Movie)
Paranormal Activity 3, $19.5M
In Time, $12.8M
Footloose, $5.75M
The Rum Diary, $5.7M
Real Steel, $5.5M
The Three Musketeers, $3.5M
The Ides of March, $2.7M
Moneyball, $2.2M
Courageous, $1.8M
Dolphin Tale, $1.6M

And Anonymous is estimated to grab just over $1M in 265 theaters. It probably won't be picking up any PTA.

Well, looks like Anonymous was Roland Emmerich's 1st Box Office Failure after all. His other films were Box Office Successes (This did include The Day After Tomorrow, which opened at #2 behind Shrek 2).

But Puss in Boots will break the Halloween record and it's a healthy start for a non-summer or Holiday release. Drops should be minimal until Happy Feet Two opens.

In other news, Like Crazy is looking at a $25,000-$30,000 PTA for the weekend.

For 11/18 tips, I'm guessing at #1 will be Twilight Breaking Dawn Part I and at #2 will be Happy Feet Two Cause I think those 2 are gonna make big money when they come out.

Plain and simple, it's a bad date for a kid's movie and just because it breaks a record doesn't mean it's not underperforming for what could have been on a different release date. Maybe it'll hold well and they'll make money that way.

The first Shrek barely dropped in its second week (I believe the second week drop was under 1%). This could manage a drop under 20% (under 10% if you really want to be crazy).

And two movies comparable to Puss in Boots, Rango and Rio, had $38 million and $39 million openings. A $36 million start isn't a bad opening and on par with those two.

Shrek was (obviously) not an established franchise, which is the reason for the small drop in the first one and not the next three. When a franchise's (I'm counting Puss as a Shrek film) last three films grossed $108/$121/$70 M openings, you should be aiming higher than Rio or Rango IMO. And if it were on a different date that probably would have happened.

I just think they dropped the ball with the release date.

Reportedly, Katzenberg placed it in October because he needed the money sooner. Apparently, he's suffering from financial trouble due to him losing his distribution deal with Paramount and DreamWorks Animation stocks being down. The only things keeping him afloat (besides the worldwide grosses on these films) is Spielberg paying him to use the DreamWorks name and the deals he made with Netflix and all of the merchandising and television deals he's made.
