I'm not so sure. Boussh mentioned something about a limited release initially. So maybe this is it?

Sony is opening Anonymous in 250 theatres and expanding a week later. They want to build word-of-mouth and appeal to a more literate crowd (the same strategy worked on Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice) in early weeks before getting the mainstream crowd later on.

I'm just surprised it's getting good reviews. The trailer made it look like some awful Da Vinci Code-inspired flick.

Deadline is reporting PA3 made 8M in it's midnight screenings...higher than PA2 by almost 2M. Reviews are good for it too (75% RT, 6.1 so far on imdb)...I know it will fall steeply in the coming weeks, but I wish I would have picked it on more than just my Aug-Oct slates.

It also had four hundred more theatres screening it than Paranormal Activity 2 (2,200 vs. 1,800) and nearly every place had two shows (a 10:00 pm and a midnight show). Comparing the two, Paranormal Activity 3 had a lower PTA on Thursday.

Rentrak's computers are down right now so there won't be any numbers until early Saturday morning.

PA3 is only in 2,200 theaters? That's kind of low for something expected to hit north of $35M this weekend.

2200 theatres for the Thursday midnight screenings. Boosch is making the point that even though PA3's midnight numbers were higher than PA2, it was shown in more screens. Hence it may not beat PA2's opening weekend number.

I believe the $26 million number included the Thursday night shows.

And The Mighty Macs I believe did just $50,000 on Friday (according to HSX), on its way to a $125,000 weekend.

Deadline's saying $45 M for PA3's OW. I'll take $100-ish M from a 6th rounder.
Tenet: Criterion Edition. Now with more Backwards Man.
