An expansion is planned for November 23rd on The Descendants. I was in St. Louis earlier this week and one of the theatres I went to (the Plaza Frontenac) had The Descendants booked for November 23rd on an exclusive engagement.

So pick with some caution on the PTA front. It should have good box office though (I took it more for box office anyway).

numbersix wrote:Good logic, SS, though there's one or two movies you think will be cancelled out that I feel will destroy even the successful wide releases, and be major PTA champs like 27 Hours was. I also don't have a lot of faith in Melancholia for PTa points. Might do well in its opening weekend, but mixed reviews will hurt it.
I agree, I think Melancholia, and Lars Von Trier in particular, will be a movie which divides audiences. I for one didn't go see it at the Film Festival a few months ago due to my general lack of appeal towards Von Trier, despite it's success at Cannes. I'll probably watch it eventually, but it wasn't a must see for me. I think the likes of Marilyn will appeal more to general art house audiences.

And interesting on The Descendants, I'll have to keep a close eye on that.

Melancholia will grab points on opening week-end, but it will have a word of mouth much too mixed, like the reviews, to really last long.

My Week with Marilyn's first echoes are to week to be huge in PTA. Williams' buzz will help it, but there are 3 or 4 films, for now, I would prefer to have on my slates. Of course it's still early and word of mouth could change, but for now...

I do tend to think movie's like Marilyn are critic-proof though. Marilyn will bring in the art house crowds and I reckon it will keep them coming. However, as you say, there are question marks over both of them, which is why I think it makes The Skin I Live In even more of a must have movie because it's a pretty safe bet.

Isn't it great that October-December is the period that decides our Super Leagues? I love it. Its by far the most challenging portion of the schedule as far as the game is concerned, especially in Ultimate. Whoever set that up must be some sort of genius.

Dammit. I was just beginning to form the PTA section of my slates around it. It will struggle now with all the other PTA movies coming out over those couple of weeks.

The Weinstein Company is reportedly planning a November 23rd limited release and a December 25th wide release.

I wonder what this means for The Artist?

I'm surprised. I also wonder what will happen with The Artist because of this move.

Might get pushed a week or two later. I don't think there's as much competition for limited releases in a market. Black Swan and King's Speech both came out close to each other and both made a lot of cash.

I'm beginning to think Marilyn could be a major film and indeed be a success as a wide film. The buzz is beginning.

That's the reason I picked it in the year-long league... not that it'll do me much good any more.
