Probably about $27-35 million. I imagine Saturday will drop a little and Sunday will drop a lot.

Deadline says:
Battle LA $30+M ("It definitely had very strong matinees today,")
Rango #2
#3 "Red Riding Hood which is performing much softer than the predicted $20M."
#4 Adjustment Bureau
and...

Mars Needs Moms looks like it "is going to be one of the biggest money losers of all time." $150 M budget, less than $10 M OW even with 3D ticket pricing.

I'm seeing Mars Needs Moms tomorrow with my mother. We'll probably be the only two people in the theatre.

And... yet another motion-capture movie falls on its ass. I am now very worried for Tintin, even WITH Spielberg involved.

I'm not. Avatar was 60% motion capture and it was the biggest film of all-time.

Mars Needs Moms failed for two reasons:

1. Animated sci-fi almost never does well.
2. The release date. Opening it one week after Rango and two weeks before Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 was a terrible idea. Had it been saved for July or August, it probably would have done better.

I think it failed because, regardless of what it ends up being, it didn't look like a film any quadrant would like to see. But, when you spend $150 M on a film, you've got to release it and get something back.

Mars needs moms looked awful and that's coming from someone who loves animated films.

Estimates are even better for Battle Los Angeles. They're saying $13.5 M FRI/$39 M OW now.
Rango #2 still ($5.5/$23.5)
Little Red Riding Hood an even softer $5.7/$15.1 M
Adjustment Bureau #4 (3.4/11)
Mars Needs Moms 1.1/7.5 (even worse!)

Glad I grabbed LA on a couple of slates.

It's official: doing a film that depicts the military in a positive light is bound to make money, no matter how bad it really is.

And how is Rango not holding very well? Are soccer moms really that against characters smoking but not against characters eating their own shit (like in Alvin and the Chipmunks)?

In other news, the first reviews for Source Code are out and early word is negative. The current Rotten Tomatoes numbers stand at 1/3 and reviews consider it a jumbled mess that never seems to end.

In other words, Inception it is not.

People like to see alien apocalypse films as long as they know some of the people in it and it's marketed well.

I think the conventional parent probably believes that when your kid is old enough to see a movie in theaters, they're old enough to know not to eat poo. But, if smoking is seen in a positive light, there's a better chance (however slight) that they'll smoke when they're older. But anyways, I don't really think that's why Rango dropped hard.

Your really going to judge it on three reviews? That's kind of stupid imo.

The Guardian gave Source Code a 4/5 rating, so looks lik it's not all bad. I will agee, though, that this is the kind of film that reviews will make or break.

Friday Estimates (BOM)

Battle: Los Angeles, $13.5M
Rango, $5.4M
Red Riding Hood, $5M
Adjustment Bureau, $3.4M
Mars Needs Moms, $1.725M
Beastly, $1.68M
Hall Pass, $1.53M
Just Go With It, $1.2M
Unknown, $955K
The King's Speech, $950K

Look for Rango's and MNM's numbers to improve, possibly. Kids' movies usually get better attendance on Sat/Sun than Fri.

Weekend Estimates (BoxOffice)

Battle: LA, $37M
Rango, $23M
Red Riding Hood, $14M
Adj. Bureau, $11.5M
Mars Needs Moms, $7.3M
Happy 60th birthday Jet Li! (4/26/23)

These reviews come from SXSW and a movie that plays there almost never gets a negative reaction (a good example being last year's MacGruber). So if a movie gets bad reviews from there, then it must really suck.
