Why would critics only like a movie just because it's in SXSW?

Re: SPEARE'S TIPS - The Films of 3/11/11
I'm saying that in Austin, they are usually extra nice to the films and often give undeserving films good reviews. This seems to be a rare case of a movie there getting bad reviews.
Also, good news for people who have Jane Eyre. Focus is planning a slow expansion and will still be under 200 theatres by the sixth week. So that means lots of possible points. Also, its weekend is looking at over $30,000 PTA.

But why would critics at the festival be extra nice? What reason would they have? Critics from publications all over the world go there so it's not like they have any particular bond with the place. Why would the Guardian, for example, a UK paper, like a film more just because it's in a particular festival?
I also checked up your one example, MacGruber, and the SXSW reviews were actually very mixed

I seemed to remember the Rotten Tomatoes rating then being 90% and a trailer was even cut using nothing but the SXSW reviews. But my point is that one should take SXSW acclaim with a grain of salt.numbersix wrote:But why would critics at the festival be extra nice? What reason would they have? A good weekend in the PTA department. Five new movies (four in the game) get over $10,000 PTA.
5 points - Jane Eyre, $45,500
4 points - Kill The Irishman, $31,000 (reportedly this flopped in New York and Los Angeles but did monster numbers in Cleveland since the film is based on a true story in that area, expect an expansion in mostly Irish-centric areas and the Midwest)
3 points - Certified Copy, $16,800
(3 Backyards - $11,000)
2 points - Battle: Los Angeles, $10,536
1 point - Rango, $5,876
And the top five points:
5 points - Battle: Los Angeles, $36 million
4 points - Rango, $23.1 million (still can't believe this dropped so hard)
3 points - Red Riding Hood, $14.1 million
2 points - The Adjustment Bureau, $11.4 million
1 point - Mars Needs Moms, $6.8 million (10th worst opener in over 3,000 theatres)
5 points - Jane Eyre, $45,500

Thanks, Boosh.
No word yet on Making the Boys or Black Death, both of which have an outside shot at that #5 spot.

It looks like Buscemi's theory on Source Code is shot. The positive reviews keep coming in including a glowing review from Richard Roper.

Re: SPEARE'S TIPS - The Films of 3/11/11
I guess films that aren't indie, comedies or pretentiously hip aren't popular at SXSW (example: Bridesmaids got excellent word there and will probably get dismissed as a Hangover imitator by mainstream critics).
