It did better because Roald Dahl is huge amongst children, so I suspect that was the main factor.

Word on the street (and by that I mean HSX) is that Hugo is tracking poorly and the studio is starting to pull back on the print ads. Take it for what it's worth (website gossip :) )

Ron, keep in mind that Hugo's only opening in 1,200 theatres. Paramount seems to be thinking legs rather than a high opening (that or Paramount's like every other studio this year and dumping indie pickups).

And the poor tracking is all Paramount's fault. They've done a bad job marketing it (it probably would have been better marketed had Columbia kept the film and moved Arthur Christmas to a different date).

The fact that it opens with 1200 is a good thing, it will do a similar thing to other success stories that opened low, not sure i can remember a family flick doing that though. Remember it is made by Martin Scorsese, who i honest think will not make a bad film until the day he dies, and it has a steller cast including Sacha Baren Cohen, Jude Law, Christopher Lee, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer and Ray Winstone, not to mention yound up and comer Asa Butterfield.
Paramount know what they are doing. And its in 3D.

Sweeney Todd had a similar opening four years ago and did decently (it didn't break even until DVD though).
