Box Office Top 20 - Fall 2013

Post by JohnErle »

Announcing the inaugural Mega Contest, which is a variation of the Super Contest that many of us have played in the past. The primary difference is that we'll be picking films in September instead of January, which means there are still a lot of question marks about next summer's films, so this will be a good test of long-term prognostication skills.

THE RULES

Each entrant must chose what they think will be the Top 20 grossing films, in order, between September 2013 and August 2014. The winner will be determined by total cumulative box office.

In case of a tie where two entrants have picked the same 20 films, order will be used as a tiebreaker, so be careful when ranking your picks.

Each entrant also can pick 2 "bench" films. This means that if one or two of the films in your Top 20 gets moved past August 2014, your bench picks will be used as replacements. Make sure to order your bench films correctly (i.e. your #1 bench film will be the first picked if a Top 20 choice loses its date)

Winners will be announced by the end of September 2014, to give films that open in late August a fighting chance.

The closing date for entries is midnight PST September 30th.

If you want to pick a film from September 2013, you must submit your list by the Wednesday before the film opens. So anyone who thinks Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 is worth picking needs to have their list submitted by September 25th at midnight PST.

Once you submit your list it can't be changed, so if you submit a list two weeks before the deadline and one of your films gets bumped prior to the deadline, you'll have already used up one of your bench picks.

I'll be tabulating the final scores and doing occasional status reports throughout the year.

Good luck, and choose wisely.

Sounds good. A nice idea to help us think harder about the summer blockbusters of 2014.

Quick question John: what is the cut off for counting BO. Is it the end of August 2014? If so, that means that August releases won't have their full BO results counted by the time the game ends, which is worth pointing out.

Nobody told me I had to READ to play this game. Do I look like a brain scientist?

There will also be math.

If you forfeit now no one will think any less of you.

Wow. Some real surprises, there, Brock. I'm happy with my list but want to wait a week or two in case there are any new announcements or major changes.

You're a brave man for making your picks so early, Brockster. And you made some Bold-Ass choices, too. Your #2 probably won't be in my top 22, but that's what's going to make this version of the Super Contest so fun -- all the question marks hanging over next summer's releases. I'm not even sure what Tammy is, so it's time for me to start my research!

That's what I thought when I read Brockster's list "What the heck is Tammy !". Now I've seen. And I know it won't make my list. But that's a very interesting list. I'll come up with mine later in the month.

Well, I don't have much to lose.

But yeah, the first one was received so well and earned so much over a weak period that I think this could end up with Despicable Me 2 numbers. With Hunger Games 2 facing stiff competition over the holiday period, I'm not sure if it will do as well as the original, and there's no other slam-dunk 300m hit over the period - Spidey comes close as it opens the summer.
