Boosch is down on box office performances? Wow, what a surprise.

My new guide to winning is to double any figure Boosch is low on, and third any figure he's high on. Worked so far ;)

I know Lone Ranger looks dumb, but even with that prime release date (what was the last big release flop that opened on 4th of July weekend? Public Enemies? Wild Wild West?) and the backing of Disney, I'm seeing it pretty low on a lot of lists.

Is it the next John Carter? Has America finally tired of Johnny Depp's schtick, a 50 year old man who seems like he aspires to be the Keith Richards of film? Who has routinely made shitty, awful films for several years now (Dark Shadows, Alice In Wonderland, Pirates 2-4, The Tourist, etc)?

Or might it be a actually good movie and have impressive legs over July/August? After all, this is the director that turned a ride into several billion dollar films (one that was actually GOOD, to boot) AND made the weirdest, delightful animated film into a hit. And we know Armie Hammer has some screen presence, from The Social Network, and he has the looks and strong chin of a younger Aaron Eckhart. (And I've got to imagine he got at least somewhat far into the Man of Steel casting...)

As True Grit taught us, a Western can prosper if it is a well-made movie.

The next John Carter is 47 Ronin. Hell, that film could enter the Guinness Book of World Records for most money lost (the current record holder is Cutthroat Island).

Anyway, while Lone Ranger looks like it will lose money, it won't be the month's big money loser. That will be Pacific Rim, which looks to appeal to absolutely no one outside of the Comic-Con crowd.

I don't think anyone is expecting 47 Ronin to do well, whereas there were high hopes for John Carter. The blockbuster I see faring the worst is Wolverine. The first wasn't liked, the franchise has moved on, and there's plenty of competition.

I do think little of Lone Ranger. I wouldn't have included it at all on my slate if it wasn't for the Holiday release date. I'm thinking 100-120m.

The fact that Universal greenlighted a $150 million budget on it and the current cost is $225 million seems to state otherwise (by comparison, the budget for Cutthroat Island adjusts to $138.3 million). To avoid passing Cutthroat Island's net losses record, 47 Ronin would need to gross $78 million worldwide (of course, 47 Ronin hasn't even started its ad campaign yet and that will surely be between $75-100 million).

I just noticed that Mr. Peabody and Sherman was bumped to 2014... is it too late to replace it on my list?

Yep. It's too late. I'd rather be able to edit it until the lock date myself, but you aren't allowed.

Redraider wants to play too, but for some reason he is having difficulty logging into the forums. If need be, he will e-mail me or Six his picks so they can be posted on time.
