2012 Super Contest Updates

Post by numbersix »

The thread below is locked for some reason.

Is anyone keeping track of who is winning this?

I have a rough spreadsheet in place, and according to my figures Chien is in the lead but SS is closing in fast.

Well you had Wreck-it Ralph, Lorax, and Taken 2 on your slate, and only a few others had those films.

However, because of how Django and Les Mis are performing it looks like Banks is going to win it.

Is someone going to take the initiative to update this?

I think everyone chose The Hobbit, and Les Miz and Django are down to a trickle, so a winner could possibly be declared, unless someone with those two titles is within striking distance of the title.

I know I'm not winning (damn you AL:VH and Neighbourhood Watch) but it would be nice to know where we stand.

I've been keeping track (unofficially?) of the figures, so I'll post an update later today. Last time I checked there was a clear winner but let's see if Django's hold has changed that.

Thanks, Six.

I'm getting ready for this year's picks as well. I'll probably wait until the last minute, just like last year, to see if new trailers or release dates come out. Hopefully I'll remember to submit on time.

Using the estimates at this weekend here's how the Super Contest is turning out

InOrder, in Billions
Banks: 4.558
Ron B: 4.533
SS: 4.511
English Ozzy: 4.503
Chien: 4.491
W: 4.486
John E: 4.473
numbersix: 4.461
Aquamann: 4.387
Buscemi: 4.365
Tranny: 4.264
UDM: 4.232
Shryke: 4.108

With Banks leading, and holding both Les Mis and Django, it's pretty much impossible for him to not win the competition, so congrats! While almost all of us had a sub 40m stinker the worst Banks managed was Battleship's 65m.

On the other end poor Shryke suffered from losing too many films from his list, with four of his films pushed to 2013. And the Frustration Award must go to Ron B, who had Lincoln as the second film on his bench, but only one film from his main list got postponed. Had he put Lincoln a little higher he might have won the game.

Wow. I didn't expect the top 10 to be so close. One pick out of twenty really could have made the difference. Replace one of those $40 million stinkers a lot of us had with a Magic Mike or a Les Miz and things would have looked quite different.

I also find it interesting that no one predicted the phenomenal success of Ted. It was the 9th highest grossing film of 2012 but none of us had it in our top 22.

It's rare enough to see an R-rated comedy perform like that at the BO to not put one in your predicted Top 22, I guess...

Actually R-Rated comedies usually turn up in the Top 20... Bridesmaids, The Hangover 1 and 2, Horrible Bosses, Tropic Thunder, Sex and the City, etc.

I tried to bear that in mind with the 2013 game but I just wasn't confident enough that This is the End, The Internship or The Heat (if they're rated R) would be huge.

The thing is you don't get 3 or 4 each year reaching such levels, so you gotta pick carefully, and indeed, last year we made the wrong choices. Yes, mea culpa, I thought the pairing of Sandler and Andy Samberg would make more than a talking teddy bear
So this year I scrapped the R-rated comedies from my predictions, yet again. Unless Anchorman 2 gets one and it leaves my bench.
